Baodingshan and Beishan Day Route

Baodingshan is the main event: large narrative carvings reward a museum introduction and an unhurried cliff walk. Beishan adds smaller, finely worked niches, but needs a separate transfer. Give Baodingshan the larger part of your day and treat Beishan as the afternoon decision.

Morning: visitor center, museum, cliff

Set your arrival destination to the Dazu Rock Carvings Visitor Center, not directly to the museum or Shengshou Temple. The official access notice, effective November 2025, requires ordinary visitors to complete identity and ticket checks there. Older temple-side parking shortcuts are no longer a reliable entrance.

Follow the uphill visitor route and see the museum before the Dafowan carvings. Use it to establish the chronology and learn how to read a narrative panel, then slow down at the Wheel of Reincarnation, Thousand-Armed Guanyin and Nirvana scene. Leave room for interpretation rather than budgeting only for walking past the statues. The Baodingshan guide explains the full circuit.

At the rental desk, establish where any audio guide must be returned. After the cliff circuit, follow the signed exit through Baoding Old Street to the return shuttle; finish the equipment return before going to your vehicle. This avoids an unnecessary walk back from the parking area.

Afternoon: a second carving site or more time at Baodingshan

Pause for food and check your remaining time before leaving for Beishan. Add it when admission is still available, your onward and return transport are settled, and you can enjoy the niches without watching the clock. The transfer between sites is separate from Baodingshan’s internal shuttle.

If the museum and cliff circuit have filled the day, finish there. A leisurely first site with useful interpretation offers more than rushing both. Public-transport travelers should account separately for the intercity arrival, the journey to Baodingshan, the Beishan transfer and the trip back to their departure station.

Tickets and the overnight alternative

Check museum and shuttle inclusions on your Baodingshan product and verify Beishan admission separately. For a driver or tour, confirm the two actual sites, meeting point, language and return destination before payment; “Dazu” alone does not describe the whole route.

An overnight stay in central Dazu lets you visit Beishan the following morning. It is a useful choice after a late arrival or when you want longer with the carvings. Match the accommodation’s Chinese address to your arrival and departure points.
