Anhui
The most useful first trip to Anhui focuses on Huangshan: the mountain, Tunxi and a small number of Huizhou villages. The province is larger than this southern cluster, but the current route has a clear identity and practical transport. Hefei can serve as an air or rail gateway; it does not need to consume a night when your purpose is Huangshan.
Choose the trip shape
- Mountain first: two nights near Mount Huangshan, then Tunxi and one village cluster.
- Huizhou without the climb: Tunxi, Huizhou Ancient City, Chengkan and one of Xidi or Hongcun.
- Balanced route: one mountain day, one recovery night and two focused heritage days.
Do not schedule Hongcun, Xidi, Chengkan and several smaller villages merely because they share white walls and dark tiled roofs. Choose one for preserved residential planning, another only when it offers a genuinely different craft, landscape or overnight atmosphere.
How many days
Four days is the practical minimum: arrive in Huangshan city, spend a full day on the mountain, then use two days for Tunxi and a village. Six days allow an overnight on or near the mountain, two distinct villages and the eastern Huizhou area without rushing. Add a weather buffer if the mountain is the main reason for the trip.
Bases and route
Tunxi is the transport and food base. Tangkou serves the south gate of Mount Huangshan. Hongcun and Xidi sit in Yixian County, while Chengkan, Xixinan and Huizhou Ancient City form another cluster nearer Huangshan North station. They should not all be treated as short walks from one town.
Five-day plan
- Arrive at Huangshan North or Tunxi Airport and settle in Tunxi.
- Move to Tangkou and prepare for an early mountain start.
- Explore Mount Huangshan using only open paths and cableways; stay nearby.
- Choose Hongcun or Xidi, then add one nearby village only if time remains.
- Visit Huizhou Ancient City or Xixinan before returning to the rail station.
When to visit
Spring and autumn offer comfortable walking and strong demand. Summer is hot at lower elevations and can bring storms; winter creates snow and ice but may close paths. A sea of clouds, sunrise or snow cover is never guaranteed. Village fields and seasonal festivals are working landscapes and local events, not permanent performances.
Getting around and staying
Fast rail reaches Huangshan North. Scenic buses, local buses and drivers connect the station, Tangkou and village clusters. Confirm the exact pickup point and last return before leaving; rural ride-hailing is less predictable at night. Stay near the gate needed next morning, and pack light if a guesthouse lies inside stone lanes.
What to book first
Reserve mountain entry, cableway or shuttle products, holiday trains and any mountain hotel first. Then arrange the village transport. Recheck weather and trail operation immediately before the ascent.
