Tunxi Old Street: a low-commitment urban evening
Tunxi Old Street works best as an arrival or departure-night walk, not as a substitute for a Huizhou village or a full preserved-town day. Its value lies in surviving commercial street form, urban history and an easy transition to the riverfront—not in a promise that every shop or facade is untouched.
Recent visitor reports are consistent about active retail and tourism-oriented churn. Some enjoy the street; others find the merchandise generic and prefer the water. That disagreement is useful: the visit succeeds when you expect an operating commercial district rather than an open-air museum.
A three-zone evening
Treat the area as three distinct layers:
- Tunxi Old Street: historic-commercial fabric and shopfront scale;
- River Street and the waterfront: a waterside public-space layer whose atmosphere depends on weather and current programming;
- Liyang: a more contemporary consumption and nightlife area across a verified connection.

Look at street width, upper-storey timberwork, signs and the relationship between storefront and lane. Do not infer that every visible building has the same age or conservation status.

Skip or shorten the street if you already have several commercial old-street evenings, need rest before Mount Huangshan, or expect an inhabited rural village. Choose Hongcun, Xidi or Nanping for a different settlement type, but do not call those places non-commercial by default.
Wet stone, delivery vehicles and event crowding can reduce accessibility. Keep a simple turnaround point and do not rely on a waterfront performance to justify the evening.

Use Tunxi Old Street as a flexible urban walk around travel logistics. Start with the historic-commercial layer, extend to the riverfront or Liyang only if the mapped connection suits you, and judge purchases separately from the street's heritage value.
