China in May
May begins with the year's first nationwide holiday and then becomes one of the best travel months in China. The Labor Day break filled almost every famous site from 1 to 5 May in 2026; the statutory days in 2027 are 1–2 May, and the full break will be announced in November. From about 6 May, crowds drop sharply, the north is warm and green, and the plateau parks of Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet open up before the summer rains.
The south is the exception. Guangzhou and Guilin enter their wettest weeks, and the Yangtze cities warm toward summer.

- Chengdu: Warm and humid at 27 °C, with more evening rain as the month goes on.
- Guangzhou: The real rainy season, with about 329 mm of rain and 17 wet days. Short downpours can stop the metro-to-street walk for an hour, so plan indoor anchors.
- Kunming: The rains begin late in the month, after a dry first half.
- Harbin: A pleasant 22 °C, with lilacs, the city flower, blooming across the city.
- Lhasa: 20 °C days and still few rainy days, one of the best months for the plateau.
Where to go in May
Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong: after the holiday
Jiuzhaigou's lakes are full and its forests freshly green in May. Daily visitor numbers are capped, and Labor Day sells out, but from mid-May you can often book a few days ahead. Huanglong's terraced pools sit above 3,000 m and are still cold, so bring a warm layer and give yourself an easy first day at altitude. The Jiuzhaigou–Huanglong route chooser compares the one-base and two-base plans.
Chengdu: pandas, teahouses and spring evenings
The giant pandas at the Chengdu research base are most active in the cooler first hours after opening. In May you can be there at opening without arriving in darkness. Chengdu's teahouse culture and long, warm evenings are at their best before the summer heat. See the Chengdu 4-day itinerary.
Shangri-La and northwest Yunnan
From May into June, wild rhododendrons and alpine flowers bloom on the high meadows around Shangri-La. Pudacuo National Park's lakes are calm and green, and the monsoon has not yet arrived. Nights at 3,300 m still drop to near freezing, so pack accordingly.

Lhasa and the plateau
May has warm days, clear mornings and few rainy days on the Tibetan plateau, before the July–August rains. Permits for international visitors are arranged through a licensed agency. Allow two quiet days in Lhasa to acclimatize before visiting monasteries outside the city. See the Tibet travel permit guide and the Lhasa 4-day acclimatization route.
Dunhuang and the Silk Road
Before the June–August heat and peak season, the desert is warm by day and pleasant at night. May is a good time for Mogao, the Crescent Lake dunes at sunset and the long day out to the Yadan landforms. The Silk Road route guide links Xi'an, Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang by rail.
Guiyang and Guizhou's waterfalls
Guizhou's waterfalls and karst lakes gain volume as the rains begin, and the province is green and mild. Huangguoshu, Xiaoqikong and the villages of southeast Guizhou are all fine in May. Pack rain gear and avoid the heaviest storm days for the gorge trails. See Guiyang and the Guizhou nature and villages 9-day route.

In season in May
| What | Where | When | How to do it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The first lychees | Guangzhou's markets, Zengcheng and Conghua | May for Baitangying and Feizixiao | These early varieties are cheap: 2026 reference prices were about ¥8–25 per jin (500 g). The prized Guiwei and Nuomici arrive in June |
| Mirror terraces | Longji, near Guilin | Mid- to late May, when the fields are flooded for planting | Sunrise and sunset give the best reflections. Admission is ¥80, and Jinkeng and Ping'an are at least 40 minutes apart by road, so stay in one of them |
| Jacaranda | Kunming and Xichang | Early to mid-May | See April |
| Crayfish season | Wuhan, Qianjiang (Hubei), Xuyi (Jiangsu) | May to August | Night-market restaurants sell them by the jin, spicy (麻辣) or garlic (蒜蓉). Wear the plastic gloves they give you |
| Alpine rhododendrons | Shangri-La; the high forest of Shennongjia | May into June | Shennongjia's high road reaches nearly 3,000 m; bring a fleece |
The classic route in May
| Stop | May conditions | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing and the Great Wall | A crush over Labor Day (1–5 May in 2026), then the most comfortable weeks of spring | Start the trip on 6 May or later. If you're already in Beijing over the holiday, see the Great Wall on a weekday afterwards |
| Xi'an | Warm, with highs around 28 °C; huge holiday-evening crowds at the Great Tang All Day Mall | Visit the Terracotta Army at opening, and the night streets on weekdays |
| Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou | Pleasant before the plum rains in mid-June | One of the best months for the water towns. Hire a boat early, before the tour groups |
| Chengdu pandas | Pandas move indoors at about 26 °C, which can come by late morning in late May | Enter at 07:30 and finish the outdoor enclosures by 10:00 |
| Guilin and Yangshuo | Rainy season, high water, flooded terraces at Longji | Expect occasional cruise interruptions after heavy rain, and book refundable tickets |
| Zhangjiajie | Wet and green, with a Labor Day surge | Avoid 1–5 May. After that, weekday visits are much calmer |
May dates to plan around
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 May 2026; 1–2 May 2027 statutory (full break not announced) | Labor Day holiday | The year's first big wave: sold-out trains, capped scenic areas full, hotel prices doubled at famous sites |
| Until 5 May | Spring Canton Fair, final phase | Guangzhou's Pazhou hotels stay expensive into the first days of May |
| 20 May ("520") | A popular day for weddings and dates (wǔ èr líng sounds like "I love you") | Restaurants and hotels in romantic spots book up that evening |
| Late May | High-school exam season nears (gaokao starts 7 June) | Family travel drops off; good for quiet weekdays |
| Next holiday: Dragon Boat Festival | 9 June 2027 | See the June guide |
Booking and practical advice
- Plan around Labor Day. If you must travel during it, stay put in one big city with plenty of sights. Leave capped parks such as Jiuzhaigou until after the 6th.
- Book rail on release day. Tickets for 1 May open 15 days ahead, in mid-April. The return wave, on the last day of the break, is as tight as the first. Book trains on Trip.com.
- Expect higher prices around 520. For a romantic hotel in Hangzhou, Xiamen or Sanya on 20 May, book early.
- Prepare for altitude. Above 3,000 m in Huanglong, Shangri-La and Lhasa, take the first day slowly and drink plenty of water. Sunburn is fast, so use sunscreen.
- Keep a rain buffer in the south. In Guangzhou, Guilin and Zhangjiajie, leave one flexible day for weather.
Two May routes
Ten days on the plateau, after the holiday: Chengdu 3 nights → Jiuzhaigou 3 (including Huanglong) → back to Chengdu 1 → fly to Lhasa for 3 with a licensed tour. The Southwest classic 10-day itinerary is the lower-altitude alternative.
Twelve days on the Silk Road: Xi'an 3 nights → Lanzhou 2 → Zhangye 2 → Jiayuguan 1 → Dunhuang 3, then fly out of Dunhuang or continue west to Turpan. This is the best spring window before the summer heat and peak crowds.
