Terracotta Warriors marking the eastern start of a China Silk Road route

China Silk Road: build a directional route, not a city collection

The strongest first route is Xi'an → Lanzhou → Zhangye → Dunhuang → Turpan → Urumqi → Kashgar. Allow 16 days if Kashgar matters, 14 days if you finish in Urumqi, and 12 days only by removing a city rather than shortening every stop.

Open the complete 16-day day-by-day itinerary. It exposes every transfer and uses one Urumqi–Kashgar flight so the final two days are not swallowed by rail.

Recent independent public-transport trip reports show that the rail corridor is workable, but they also repeatedly describe 14-day versions reaching Xinjiang as rushed. The hidden cost is not only train hours: Liuyuan/Dunhuang station choices, hotel changes, timed Mogao entry and long station-to-scenic transfers all need daylight.

The route logic

  • Xi'an: three days for the city and Terracotta Warriors; it is the historical anchor, not just an airport.
  • Lanzhou: one or two nights to break the western rail journey and add Yellow River and provincial context.
  • Zhangye: two nights protect a full Danxia day and the correct Zhangye West transfer.
  • Dunhuang: three nights protect Mogao's timed visit, one desert session and rail disruption margin.
  • Turpan: two nights because its oasis and ruins are a vehicle circuit, not a stop beside Turpan North station.
  • Urumqi: one context day, then fly to Kashgar if the full route is only 16 days.
  • Kashgar: two nights minimum; keep a buffer instead of attaching a permit- and weather-sensitive plateau road.

Booking order

Book Mogao Caves first, then the long rail legs, the Urumqi–Kashgar flight, and finally hotels and local vehicles. Compare live trains on Trip.com and domestic flights on Trip.com, but use the issued station, terminal, passport fields and cancellation terms—not a planning estimate—as the contract.

Mogao Caves: how the booking really works

Mogao is the one booking that can break this route, so lock it before the trains.

Where to book. Use only the official Mogao Caves visitor reservation WeChat mini-program or the mgk.org.cn website. There is no on-site sale and no authorized reseller.

Tickets.

TicketPrice in 2026 peak seasonWhat it includes
A (regular)¥238Two digital films at the Digital Exhibition Center, the shuttle, about eight caves with a guide; about 3–3.5 hours in total
B (emergency)¥100Shuttle and four caves, with no films and a briefer guide

B tickets are sold only when peak demand requires them. Visitors report up to 6,000 A and 12,000 B tickets a day in peak season.

Release timing and returns.

  • When: peak-season A tickets are widely reported to release 30 days ahead at about 07:00, and peak dates disappear in minutes.
  • Returns: a date showing "0" can still produce returned tickets if you keep refreshing the booking query. One traveler found 19 within minutes the week before travel.
  • Account limit: each account can buy only once in 30 days, so family members may need separate accounts.

If you only get a B ticket. Add a special cave on site.

  • Tickets: these are sold only at the window inside the cave area, at ¥150–200 per cave, with about 100 tickets per cave per day.
  • Which caves: popular choices include Caves 45, 57 and 220.
  • Timing: the most famous sell out by midday.

The free replica-cave exhibition at the exit is also worth time.

On the day.

  • Where to go: navigate to the Mogao Digital Exhibition Center, not the caves themselves. Arrive 30 minutes early with your passport.
  • Inside the caves: photography is banned, and it is cool even in summer.
  • Changes: you cannot change a ticket, only refund and rebook.
  • Pairing: a morning Mogao slot pairs well with the Mingsha Mountain dunes from about 16:00 for sunset.

Seasonal reality

Late spring and early autumn usually produce the best compromise. Summer brings fierce Turpan heat and crowded desert attractions; winter can be beautiful but makes the line much less forgiving. Zhangye color depends on light and weather, not a guaranteed sunset. Dunhuang wind can close or weaken outdoor plans. Xinjiang distances make same-day substitution difficult.

What not to add

Do not attach Qinghai Lake, Jiayuguan, Heavenly Lake, Sayram Lake and the Pamir Plateau to the same 16 days. Each addition creates a new transport branch. For 18–21 days, add Jiayuguan between Zhangye and Dunhuang or a carefully scheduled Urumqi side trip—not both by default.

Final decision

Choose this route for archaeology, desert landscapes, rail geography and cultural continuity. Skip it if you dislike frequent hotel changes or want a weather-proof trip. The route works because it accepts distance; it fails when every western icon is treated as nearby.
