China in July
July is high summer and family-travel season. Schools across China break up in early to mid-July, and for the next eight weeks the most famous museums, palaces and scenic areas are fully booked. Eastern and central cities sit at 32–35 °C with heavy humidity. In the north, July brings the year's heaviest rain, often as violent afternoon storms.
If you plan around that, July has real rewards. The grasslands of Inner Mongolia and Qinghai are at their greenest, canola blooms around Qinghai Lake, and the volcanic crater of Changbai Mountain is snow-free. Highland Yunnan and Guizhou stay in the mid-20s.

- Chengdu and Guangzhou: Hot and humid, with the most rain at night or in short bursts.
- Kunming: 25 °C but rainy, with 20 wet days, usually as a heavy afternoon shower.
- Harbin: 28 °C, with occasional storms but low humidity overall.
- Lhasa: The rainy season, with 20 wet days, but most rain falls at night and mornings are often clear.
Where to go in July
Hulunbuir: endless grassland
July is peak season for Hulunbuir, with green steppe and wildflowers. Rivers wind through the Mergel and Genhe valleys, and the birch forest runs north toward the Russian border. Evenings are cool enough for a jacket. Distances are long, so most visitors hire a driver from Hailar. Book July cars and rooms well ahead: this is the region's busiest month.
Qinghai Lake and Xining: canola on the plateau
Canola around Qinghai Lake usually peaks from early to late July, with yellow fields between the lake and the snow-capped ranges. From Xining, a day trip loops along the southern shore. A longer western loop toward the Chaka salt lake and the Qaidam basin needs three or four days. The plateau sits at 3,200 m, and summer sun is intense, so use sunscreen and bring a warm layer for the evenings.
Changbai Mountain: the crater lake season
From roughly June to September, more of Changbai Mountain opens: the north, west and south slopes all have summer access. Summer is also the most reliable time to see Tianchi, the volcanic crater lake, though cloud still hides it on many days. Plan two attempts. The lower forest, waterfall and hot-spring areas are pleasant at 20 °C.

Kunming and Guiyang: China's natural air conditioning
At 1,900 m and 1,100 m, Kunming and Guiyang are the big cities where summer days stay around 25 °C. Daily showers pass quickly. Guizhou's waterfalls, including Huangguoshu, are at full volume. Avoid gorge trails during heavy rain.
Harbin: summer by the Songhua
Harbin in July has riverside beer gardens, Russian architecture and evening river cruises, with Sun Island's parks green rather than white. It is an easy flight from Beijing or Shanghai.
Beijing, with a booking plan
Beijing is very busy in July with student groups. The Palace Museum releases tickets seven days ahead at 20:00 and sells nothing on the day. In summer the release often sells out within minutes, and few tickets come back afterward. Set an alarm, add every traveler's passport to the booking account in advance, and pay as soon as you secure a slot. The museum reservation guide lists the rules for the major sites.

Lotus season in the Yangtze cities
If the east is on your route, July is lotus season. West Lake in Hangzhou, Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing and the classical gardens of Suzhou are at their best from about 06:00 to 09:00, before the heat.
In season in July
| What | Where | When | How to do it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild mushrooms (野生菌) | Mushuihua market (木水花野生菌交易中心), near Fude station, Kunming Metro Line 1 | July to September | The market is open 24 hours, with wholesale overnight and retail from morning. Prices are per kilo (公斤), not per jin. 2026 visitors paid about ¥110/kg for jizong (鸡枞) and ¥380/kg for matsutake. Kitchens beside the market cook what you buy for about ¥30–40 a dish, plus a washing fee. Jianshouqing (见手青) must be fully cooked; if you have any doubt, leave it out |
| Honey peaches (水蜜桃) | Yangshan, Wuxi | July | Very soft and juicy, so eat them within a day. Roadside farm stalls are cheaper than city shops |
| Crayfish | Wuhan and Qianjiang | Peak season | See May |
| Lotus | West Lake, Hangzhou; Xuanwu Lake, Nanjing | Early mornings, July to August | Go before 09:00, before the heat |
The classic route in July
| Stop | July conditions | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing and the Great Wall | The wettest month, with violent afternoon storms and school groups everywhere | Book the Palace Museum at 20:00 exactly seven days ahead, with every passport already added to the account. Hike the wall in the morning, before the storms |
| Xi'an | Highs of 33 °C, and the Shaanxi History Museum's free summer reservations are very hard to get | Try for museum slots the moment they open, and see the Terracotta Army at opening |
| Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou | The plum rains end in early to mid-July, then 33 °C heat sets in | Sightsee before 11:00 and after 17:00. Lotus is at its best at dawn |
| Chengdu pandas | Hot. Pandas are outside mainly from 07:30 to about 09:00, then again after 14:00 | Use the West Gate (bus 409 from Junqu Zongyiyuan, Metro Line 3). The air-conditioned houses and the nursery are the midday refuge |
| Guilin and Yangshuo | Hot and humid, with summer crowds. Yulong River raft queues can reach one to two hours in peak season | Book rafts a day ahead, ride early in the morning, and keep the cruise refundable in case of floods |
| Zhangjiajie | Peak summer crowds. Tianmen Mountain's cable car runs on hourly time slots that sell out | Book on the 张家界一机游 mini-program 5–7 days ahead in peak periods |
July dates to plan around
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Early to mid-July | School summer holidays begin | Prices and crowds rise sharply at museums, theme parks, beaches and mountain parks |
| 10–11 July 2027 | Formula E Shanghai E-Prix (Shanghai International Circuit) | A busy weekend around Jiading |
| July (varies by city) | Naadam fairs and grassland festivals in Inner Mongolia | Horse racing, wrestling and archery; dates vary by banner and are announced locally |
| Late July 2027 | Yi Torch Festival (24th day of the sixth lunar month) | Torch parades in Liangshan (Sichuan) and Chuxiong (Yunnan); it fell on 6 August in 2026 |
| Mid-July to early August | "Sanfu" (三伏), the hottest period of the traditional calendar | Expect the most intense heat in the east and center |
There is no mainland public holiday in July or August. The pressure comes from school holidays rather than one date.
Booking and practical advice
- Book northern trips early. Flights, sleeper trains and rooms in Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Xinjiang and the northeast sell out weeks ahead.
- Use the 15-day rail window. Popular summer trains sell out on release day. Hold a flight as a backup for long legs. Book trains on Trip.com.
- Sightsee at the edges of the day. Start outdoor visits at opening and spend 12:00–16:00 in air-conditioned museums, malls or your hotel.
- Respect storm warnings. In the north, red and orange rain warnings can close mountain roads and Great Wall sections the same day. Keep a flexible indoor plan.
- Prepare for sun and water. Bring a sun hat, reusable bottle and electrolyte sachets. Most hotels have kettles, and train stations have hot-water dispensers.
Two July routes
Ten days of grassland and forest: Beijing 2 nights → fly to Hailar for 4 nights (Hulunbuir by car) → fly to Harbin for 2 → Changbai Mountain 2. All are cool bases, with one hot city at the start.
Nine days on the high plateau: Xining 2 nights → Qinghai Lake and Chaka loop 3 → Zhangye 2 → Dunhuang 2. Do it in mid-July for canola, and book cars well ahead.
