China in December
December splits China in two. The northeast becomes a winter theme park as ice palaces rise in Harbin, ski resorts reach full operation and rime starts to appear along the Songhua River. Meanwhile Hainan, Xishuangbanna and Hong Kong have their best dry-season weather. In between, Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai are cold, quiet and cheap, with short queues at sites that are crowded in October.
The month's practical problems come from dates. Harbin's big ice park opens partway through the month, and Christmas and New Year affect resort prices more than city prices. On top of that, the 2027 Spring Festival falls early (6 February), so the holiday rush builds from mid-January.

December weather by city
| City | Avg high | Avg low | Rain | Wet days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing | 4 °C (39 °F) | -5 °C (23 °F) | 2 mm | 2 |
| Xi'an | 7 °C (44 °F) | -3 °C (27 °F) | 6 mm | 4 |
| Shanghai | 11 °C (52 °F) | 5 °C (42 °F) | 50 mm | 8 |
| Chengdu | 11 °C (52 °F) | 5 °C (41 °F) | 7 mm | 7 |
| Guangzhou | 21 °C (69 °F) | 12 °C (53 °F) | 33 mm | 6 |
| Kunming | 16 °C (61 °F) | 5 °C (41 °F) | 14 mm | 4 |
| Harbin | -10 °C (14 °F) | -19 °C (-2 °F) | 8 mm | 7 |
| Lhasa | 10 °C (49 °F) | -6 °C (21 °F) | 1 mm | 0 |
How the numbers play out:
- Harbin: Nights of −19 °C and less than nine hours of daylight; the sun sets around 15:40. Dress in proper winter layers and plan outdoor time around lunch.
- Beijing: It is very dry and usually sunny, with sharp wind. Daytime is around 4 °C, so the Great Wall is beautiful but icy underfoot. Buildings are fully heated.
- Shanghai and the Yangtze cities: Afternoons reach 11 °C and nights fall to around 5 °C. Many restaurants, temples and old houses are unheated, so the cold indoors is what you'll notice most.
- Guangzhou and Hong Kong: Days are around 21 °C and dry, ideal for walking and hiking.
- Kunming: Bright days of 16 °C with almost no rain. Black-headed gulls arrive from Siberia and gather at Dianchi Lake and Cuihu Park from November to March.
- Lhasa: It is sunny, dry and very quiet. Days are mild in the sun, but nights fall to −6 °C.
Where to go in December
Harbin: time the trip to the ice-park opening
Harbin's Ice and Snow World is rebuilt from river ice every winter. The 27th edition opened on 17 December 2025, and the past three seasons all opened between 17 and 21 December. In 2025–26, standard adult tickets cost ¥298 in the opening week and ¥328 from 24 December. The 2026–27 dates and prices had not been announced in late October 2026.
Book a December Harbin trip for after the 20th, or plan the first days around Central Street, Saint Sophia, the Songhua River and the Siberian tiger park, then add the ice park once its opening is confirmed. Allow three nights; see the Harbin 3-day winter itinerary and the Ice and Snow World guide.
Chongli: full ski season, one hour from Beijing
By mid-December most of Chongli's eight resorts run most of their terrain, and weekday passes still cost far less than those for New Year week. A Friday-to-Sunday trip from Beijing by high-speed train is easy. The Chongli guide matches resorts to the right station and skill level.
Jilin City: the first strong rime
Rime is possible on the Songhua River from late November. December mornings already produce three-star forecasts at the Ashi riverbank, although the best odds come in January. A December stop in Jilin City works well when it is combined with skiing at Songhua Lake. Plan two mornings for the rime.

Snow Town and Yabuli
The deep, rounded snow on the roofs of China Snow Town is usually reliable by mid-December. Yabuli, one of China's oldest ski areas, sits on the same rail corridor. Treat Snow Town as one night and a morning, since most of the village can be walked in a few hours.
Sanya: dry, warm and still before the peak
December in Sanya brings 25–27 °C beach days with little rain. Prices climb sharply from Christmas through New Year and again for Spring Festival, so the first three weeks are the value window. Some days the north-east monsoon brings wind and choppy water to the east-facing bays; on those days, pick a sheltered beach. See the Sanya winter sun guide.
Hong Kong and Macau: Christmas lights and clear hiking days
Hong Kong decorates the harbor for Christmas, and the dry, cool weather is ideal for the Dragon's Back and Lantau trails. Hotel rates rise over Christmas and New Year's Eve, when the harbor fireworks draw large crowds. Plan your exit route from the waterfront before midnight. Use the Hong Kong 4-day itinerary.

Kunming, Dali and Beijing
Kunming and Dali are in their dry, sunny season, and Kunming has its gull flocks. Beijing has its shortest queues of the year at the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. It's a strong city choice if you dress for the cold and avoid the windiest days for the Great Wall.
In season in December
| What | Where | When | How to do it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cured meats (腊味) | Guangzhou, Hunan and Sichuan | December and January | Sausages and cured pork hang on balconies across the south. In Guangzhou, this is claypot-rice season (煲仔饭); scrape the crisp rice from the bottom |
| Iron-pot stew (铁锅炖) | Harbin and the northeast | All winter | A wood-fired iron pot built into the table, with goose or fish and corn cakes stuck to the rim. It is the warmest meal in the northeast |
| Winter cherry blossoms | Kunming and Yuxi | December to January | Pink Himalayan cherries bloom in the dry winter sun. Pair them with the gulls at Dianchi Lake |
| Hot springs | Tengchong, Changbai Mountain, Conghua near Guangzhou | Winter | Book a hotel with its own pools rather than paying separate day-entry tickets |
| The last male hairy crabs | Yangcheng Lake | Early December | After mid-December, most crab houses wind down |
The classic route in December
| Stop | December conditions | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing and the Great Wall | Cold and very dry, with the year's shortest queues. In December 2025, Mutianyu's toboggan paused for about a week from 10 December for maintenance | Ride the cable car both ways if the toboggan is closed. Choose low-wind days for the wall |
| Xi'an | Cold, quiet and good value | An easy month for the Terracotta Army and museums; dress warmly for the wall |
| Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou | Around 5–11 °C, with unheated interiors; Christmas lights in Shanghai | Keep walking days short, and plan warm stops |
| Chengdu pandas | Winter hours (entry from 08:00), with cold, active mornings | Arrive by 09:00 and stay until lunch |
| Guilin and Yangshuo | The dry season, with low water and cold river wind | Visit for quiet villages and cycling rather than full rivers. Rafts may be limited |
| Zhangjiajie | The first frost and ice on the peaks, with frequent fog | Glass walkways and the Tianmen Mountain road close in ice. Keep a spare day |
December dates to plan around
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 7–13 Dec 2026 | Zhuhai Airshow (China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition) | Public days 11–13 December; Zhuhai and Macau hotels fill and cross-border traffic rises |
| Mid- to late December | Harbin Ice and Snow World opening (17 December in 2025) | Plan Harbin's ice-park evening after the confirmed opening date |
| 22 Dec 2026 | Winter solstice (冬至) | Northern families eat dumplings, southern families tangyuan; restaurants are busy that evening |
| 24–25 Dec | Christmas Eve and Christmas | Not a mainland public holiday; malls and Hong Kong get busy, and Macau and Sanya hotels rise |
| 31 Dec – 1 Jan | New Year's Eve and New Year's Day | New Year's Day is a public holiday; expect city countdown crowds and higher resort prices. The 2027 New Year's Day falls on a Friday |
The 2027 mainland holiday schedule is normally published by the State Council in November, and the public holidays page will carry it. Until then, plan around the fixed dates above and not around the length of a break.
Seasonal hours, closures and prices
- Huangshan: Winter admission of ¥150 from 1 December to the end of February, against ¥190.
- Mount Emei: The cheapest window, at ¥110, runs from 15 December to 15 January.
- Jiuzhaigou: Low season (¥80 admission) until 31 March, with frozen waterfalls on cold days.
- Chengdu panda base: Winter hours until 28 February.
- Changbai Mountain: The north and west slopes are open with winter hours; the south slope is closed.
Booking and practical advice
- Book Harbin rooms early for weekends and New Year. Weekday rooms in December are usually easy to find. Late December weekends and 30 December–2 January fill fast.
- Buy weekday ski passes. In Chongli, the New Year and Spring Festival day passes have cost ¥600–800, against about ¥443 on an ordinary weekday at Thaiwoo.
- Prepare for the cold. Phone batteries die fast below −15 °C, so carry a spare power bank in an inside pocket. Wear insulated, non-slip boots for icy Harbin pavements.
- Plan for Spring Festival now. With Lunar New Year on 6 February 2027, the travel rush will start in mid-to-late January. If your trip runs into January, book the long-distance trains for that part as soon as sales open, 15 days ahead.
- Find warm indoor stops. Unheated interiors in the south make museums, malls, bathhouses and hot-pot restaurants useful breaks during a cold day of walking.
Two December routes
Ten days of northeast winter: Harbin 3 nights → Snow Town 1 → Jilin City 2 → Changbai Mountain 3, starting after the Harbin ice park opens. This follows the Northeast winter 10-day route with an extra night in Jilin City for the rime.
Seven days of cities and sun: Beijing 3 nights → fly to Sanya for 4 nights. Visit Beijing's palaces in crisp, uncrowded weather, then go to the beach. Book Sanya for the first three weeks of the month to avoid holiday prices.
