Illuminated Chinese festival lanterns at night

Chinese New Year 2027 Travel Guide

Lunar New Year Day falls on Saturday, February 6, 2027. The Hong Kong Observatory's official 2027 calendar confirms February 6 as the first day of the first lunar month. The mainland State Council had not yet announced the continuous Spring Festival break, adjusted working weekends or the 2027 Spring Festival travel-rush dates when this guide was checked.

That distinction controls the whole trip. February 6 is fixed; a rumored nine-day break, a copied 2026 rail calendar or last year's temple-fair dates are not. Book only around facts that the responsible authority has published, then make the route resilient to the holiday details that are still pending.

Recent traveler discussions describe a pattern that can look contradictory but is entirely plausible: an office district can be quiet because residents have traveled home, while a major station, famous attraction or holiday resort is packed. Small family restaurants may close, while malls, hotel dining and tourist-area businesses continue. Treat those accounts as evidence for fallbacks, not as proof that a named venue will open or close in 2027.

What Is Confirmed—and What Is Not

Festival lighting can be spectacular, but this photograph does not represent a confirmed 2027 venue or program. Use the named organizer's current notice before traveling for one event.

Should a First-Time Visitor Go During Spring Festival?

Choose the period deliberately if celebrating the season matters more than running the easiest possible sightseeing schedule. A stable one- or two-city trip can work well: decorations, family meals, temple visits and holiday energy offer a side of China that an ordinary week does not. You must accept queues, reduced small-business choice and more fragile intercity transport.

Choose another February or March window if you want maximum restaurant choice, spontaneous high-speed-rail moves, quiet headline attractions or a dense first-trip checklist. The problem is not that China shuts down. It is that different systems change in different directions at the same time.

Traveler reports reinforce this decision. Some describe quiet streets and enough mall or hotel services; others report sold-out trains, long attraction lines and closed neighborhood restaurants. The useful conclusion is not “good” or “bad.” It is that one protected base and confirmed essentials outperform a fast national route.

Build the Route Around Three Pressure Zones

Before Lunar New Year

The homecoming flow can make intercity tickets difficult before the official holiday begins. Avoid using the final pre-holiday days for a multi-leg rail chain. If an international flight requires a domestic connection, arrive in the departure city at least one night early and keep the airport transfer simple.

Lunar New Year Eve and Day

Keep February 5–6 in one city. Book a hotel with dependable breakfast or nearby chain and mall options, save two restaurants that have published holiday hours, and carry a simple meal fallback. Do not schedule a same-day train plus a timed attraction plus a special dinner.

Large attractions may operate with special hours or crowd controls; some institutions may close. A venue name on a booking platform is not an opening notice. Confirm through its official account or website and retain a weather-independent neighborhood walk.

Return Wave

The final holiday days and the first work return can create another transport surge, but the exact 2027 dates depend on the unannounced official arrangement. Once that notice appears, mark the likely return edge and avoid placing the trip's only workable train there. A flight is not automatically immune: fares, airport transfers and rebooking capacity can also tighten.

Train and Flight Strategy

Complete passport verification in 12306 before the sale date. Search the exact station pair, not just the city. When inventory opens, prefer a direct train with a recoverable arrival time over a faster itinerary that depends on a short connection.

If the train is sold out, the official 候补 waitlist can request cancellations or added capacity. The 12306 booking guide explains passenger setup, release timing and the waitlist. Do not treat a pending request—or a third-party request placed before tickets open—as an issued ticket.

For an essential move, prepare three paths before release day:

  1. the preferred direct train;
  2. a second station, departure time or slower-train option you would genuinely use;
  3. a confirmed flight or extra hotel night that protects the international connection.

Avoid separate-ticket air–rail or rail–rail connections on peak dates unless the buffer is large enough to absorb queues, delay and a terminal transfer. Save every booking offline with the passport name, station or airport in Chinese, departure date and final confirmation status.

What May Close—and How to Check

Do not use a national yes/no list. Check each dependency:

  • Museums and attractions: official date-specific notice, reservation channel and last entry;
  • small restaurants: current map listing plus a direct call or message, with a mall or hotel fallback;
  • banks and government services: assume holiday limits and solve cash, cards, visa questions and passport needs before the break;
  • pharmacies and clinics: save a 24-hour hospital and a chain pharmacy near the hotel;
  • tours and guides: reconfirm the named guide, pickup and cancellation terms rather than only the agency order;
  • metro and buses: use the live operator notice for extended, reduced or crowd-controlled service.

What actually closes, from recent years.

  • New Year's Eve evening. This is the hard night. A traveler who has spent many Spring Festivals on the road found ordinary Chinese restaurants open at lunch on New Year's Eve but almost all closed by late afternoon, in Nanjing, Yangzhou, smaller cities and again in 2026. The fallbacks were hotel restaurants and fast-food chains such as KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Hut.
    • Fallbacks: book a hotel or restaurant reunion dinner (年夜饭) in advance, or plan a fast-food fallback.
    • Shortened service: some places stay open but serve only lunch on the eve.
  • The first week. In Wuhan in 2026, many trendy restaurants and chains stayed open, but nearly every famous family-run hot-dry-noodle and beef-noodle breakfast shop closed for about a week, from New Year's Eve to around the eighth day. Expect the same pattern for small specialist shops elsewhere. Local posts listing "open over Spring Festival" restaurants appear each year about a week before.
  • Scenery in winter. Most big sights in the Northwest stay open over the holiday, including the Dunhuang dunes, Mogao (with a winter ticket), Zhangye Danxia and Jiayuguan. A few seasonal extras pause, such as the Chaka salt-lake train.

Recent community reports are most useful here: they repeatedly flag reduced small-restaurant choice, crowded headline sights and slower recovery when a booking fails. Carry two working payment methods, some cash, essential medication and a copy of the hotel address. The health and toilet guide explains medical fallbacks, while the apps guide covers offline addresses and transport tools.

Choose a Base That Still Works Without an Event

Beijing offers temples, historic neighborhoods and major museums, but named temple fairs and access controls require separate 2027 announcements. Base near useful metro lines and reserve only after the venue opens its real passport channel.

Guangzhou can offer flower-market atmosphere and mild weather. The market dates, road controls and closing time are district-specific, so do not chase a short-video location without a current municipal notice.

Shanghai has strong hotel, mall and indoor infrastructure. Famous waterfront and Yu Garden areas can be intensely busy even when business districts feel quiet. Use an early walk and one reserved indoor anchor rather than an all-day landmark circuit.

Chengdu supports tea, food and neighborhood time, but the most popular heritage streets can concentrate holiday crowds. Keep one quieter park or museum alternative and verify restaurant hours.

Sanya is warm but functions as a peak holiday resort. Flights, rooms and road transfers can be expensive, and a beach hotel does not remove the need for return transport. Choose it for winter sun, not as a crowd-avoidance shortcut.

For the lowest-friction version, remain in one city for four or five nights, walk locally on February 5–6, then make at most one confirmed intercity move. The February guide compares warm-south and late-winter alternatives.

Temple Fairs, Lanterns and Fireworks

A traditional festival day does not create a guaranteed public event. Each temple fair, lantern installation, drone show, flower market or fireworks program needs a named organizer, exact dates, sessions, ticket channel and crowd-control notice. Previous editions prove that an event has existed—not that it will return on the same schedule.

Be especially careful with Lantern Festival. It falls on February 20, 2027, two weeks after Lunar New Year Day, but an installation may open earlier, finish later or require a separate ticket. Build the trip around a city worth visiting without the display; add the evening only after the operator confirms it.

Never cross a barrier, enter a frozen river, fly a drone or use private fireworks because a social video shows someone doing so. City fire restrictions, airspace rules and event perimeters are date- and place-specific.

A Safer Seven-Day Pattern

This pattern works before the final holiday schedule is known because it minimizes dependencies:

  • Days 1–2: arrive in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chengdu; solve payment, SIM and reservations;
  • Days 3–5: remain in the same base across February 5–7; use one reserved sight per day plus a neighborhood route;
  • Day 6: flexible city day or the first confirmed intercity move;
  • Day 7: depart from the same city, or sleep in the international-departure city before the flight.

Do not add Xi'an, Zhangjiajie or another major base just because seven days normally allows it. During the holiday, each extra city adds a ticket release, station transfer, hotel check-in, meal search and failure point.

Final Booking Checklist

  • February 6 is confirmed; the official holiday block is not yet confirmed.
  • Passport verification in 12306 is complete for every traveler.
  • No essential connection depends on a waitlist or pre-sale request.
  • The hotel has a flexible cancellation rule and a verified Chinese address.
  • Two meal fallbacks exist for February 5–6.
  • Every attraction has a date-specific official opening or reservation check.
  • A clinic, pharmacy, cash fallback and second payment method are saved.
  • Any fair, lantern show or flower market has a named 2027 organizer notice.
  • The route remains worthwhile if the special event is canceled or overcrowded.

Chinese New Year can be a meaningful time to visit China, but it rewards restraint. Protect the fixed date, wait for the official holiday and transport notices, keep one stable base, and let confirmed celebrations enrich the trip rather than hold it together.
