Unit 731: make it the day's main commitment
The Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime Committed by Unit 731 and the surviving former site document Imperial Japan's biological-warfare programme, human experimentation and wartime crimes. This is a memorial and evidence site, not a dark-tourism photo opportunity. Allow the visit to control the day rather than squeezing it between entertainment attractions.
Reservation and documents
Use the institution's current official reservation channel and enter the original passport details exactly. A 2025 provincial notice described real-name booking and linked access to the former headquarters, but session rules and covered areas can change; recheck the live official notice for your date. Carry the physical passport used to book. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a reseller or a hotel concierge's memory.

How to visit
Begin with the chronological exhibition. Read institutional structure, documentary evidence, objects and testimony before moving to the surviving site. The material includes human suffering and may be distressing. Families should assess suitability for children rather than treating the museum as a compulsory educational stop.

Allow roughly 2.5–4 hours depending on reading depth and which site areas are open. Translation coverage can vary; bring a translation tool but keep the phone silent and avoid blocking displays. Photography rules may differ by gallery—follow the current signage, never photograph other visitors in distress, and do not stage expressive poses.

The remaining structures matter because they anchor documentary evidence to place. Follow the official sequence and barriers. Avoid narrating uncertain details from social media as established fact; the museum's evidence labels and current research programme are the appropriate authority.
Getting there and leaving space afterwards
The site is in Pingfang, well south of central Harbin. Route planning from Central Street is about 21.1 km by car and roughly 30 minutes before traffic and winter conditions. Save the full Chinese name 侵华日军第七三一部队罪证陈列馆 and confirm the correct visitor entrance.
Afterward, return to the hotel or choose a quiet meal. Do not pair the memorial with Ice and Snow World or a themed entertainment park simply to maximize pins. If another activity is necessary, use a short riverside or neighbourhood walk as a decompression buffer.
Conduct
- Dress and speak as you would at a war memorial.
- Do not eat, joke, livestream or create performative content in evidence spaces.
- Do not reduce victims to shocking imagery; read names, systems and documentary context.
- Recheck closure days, holiday controls and permitted site areas immediately before travel.
