Xiangshui Bay Coastal Road
Xiangshui Bay (香水湾) is rewarding when you want open beach, sea views and a slower afternoon than Lingshui's ticketed islands. Its weakness is the same thing: the coast is spread out, public access is inconsistent, and a beautiful map pin may leave you beside a resort gate or an unsafe road bend. Treat it as a two-to-four-hour coastal drive with three checked stops, not a beach you can reach conveniently by bus.
The route that works
Start with these Chinese map labels saved offline. They identify the route; they do not guarantee that every shoulder, stair or beach entrance is open that day.
- 香水湾滨海公路拍照点 — use the named coastal-road photo point to reach the most recognizable curve and sea view. Stay in a legal parking area and keep completely clear of the traffic lane.
- 水口庙 — continue to the public approach near Shui Kou Temple for the rocky coast and elevated view. The descent can be steep and exposed. Stop at a barrier, damaged stair or private sign; a social-media gate that happened to be open is not reliable access.
- 香水湾11号沙滩停车场 — use this as a navigation anchor for the northern beach section, then judge the real entrance and parking condition on arrival. Do not assume toilets, food, shade or lifeguards are staffed because “parking lot” appears in the name.
Driving the sequence south to north reduces backtracking. In strong afternoon sun, reverse it and finish at the road viewpoint closer to golden hour only if you already have a safe return vehicle.
Getting there and back
The checked road route from Lingshui railway station (陵水站) to the coastal-road viewpoint is about 11 km and 20 minutes by car before stop time and traffic. Arrange a driver, rental car or ride-hail that can collect you at a named pin. Save the driver's number and the Chinese hotel address before leaving the station.
Public transport is a poor fit: the useful coastal points are separated, and the final walk can place you on exposed roads. An e-scooter offers flexibility but adds heat, rain, helmet and night-riding risk. Hainan's official road guidance prohibits driving on beaches and parking on bends or steep grades; use a legal bay or lot even when other vehicles have stopped informally.
Beach and weather boundary
This coast can look calm from above while breaking waves and currents remain strong below. Swim only in an open, staffed bathing zone whose flags and lifeguards permit it. An empty beach is a scenery stop, not evidence that the water is safe. Keep children away from the waterline during rough surf and do not climb wet rocks for a photograph.
Carry drinking water, sun protection, insect repellent and shoes with grip. Check rain, wind, surf and any typhoon or coastal-road notice before departure. If visibility, lightning or wave conditions deteriorate, use the drive for short land-side viewpoints and leave the beach out.
A realistic half-day
Allow 30–45 minutes at each open stop, plus driving. Bring food only if you can take every item and all rubbish away; otherwise eat near your accommodation before or after the drive.
