Haikou: use the gateway city to read northern Hainan
Haikou is not a smaller substitute for Sanya. Its strongest trip combines a living old port, the island's provincial history, volcanic terrain and northern Hainan's wetlands. The useful planning rule is geographic: keep the compact old-city days together, the volcano south-west and Dongzhai Harbour far east.
Choose the right route
- 2 days: Qilou and the public waterfront, then Hainan Museum and Five Lords Temple.
- 3 days: add the volcanic cluster, Hai Rui and Xiuying as one return route.
- 4 days: add Dongzhai Harbour as a dedicated mangrove day.
The colored lines express sequence, not road geometry. The map keeps Dongzhai Harbour about 32 km by road from the old port in route planning and preserves the volcanic park's separate south-west position.

Port and overseas exchange
Qilou Old Street records trade, migration and Southeast Asian architectural exchange. Walk in daylight, look above current shop signs and continue to the Clock Tower to reconnect the commercial street with the riverfront.
Island history
Hainan Museum should come before scattered memorials. Its archaeology, maritime exchange and community material give context to the Temple of the Five Lords and Hai Rui Cultural Park.
Geology and defence
The Haikou Volcanic Cluster is an outdoor geology excursion. Return north through Hai Rui and Xiuying Fort rather than bouncing between unrelated central attractions.

Wetland and open coast
Dongzhai Harbour depends on tide, weather and reserve controls. The west-coast waterfront is a flexible alternative for a shorter exposed-air day, not guaranteed swimming weather.
Weather determines the itinerary
Heat, humidity, heavy rain, lightning and typhoon warnings affect more than comfort. They can close coastal areas, boats, boardwalks and crater paths. Place fixed indoor reservations first, then let Qilou arcades or a museum absorb weather changes. Never treat a sunset, beach swim or wildlife sighting as guaranteed.
For exposed routes, start early, carry water and use a vehicle when cycling becomes unsafe. Hainan's winter can still be warm, but cold fronts and wind make the north coast feel very different from resort advertising.
What to eat—and how to choose
Haikou is useful for laobacha tea sessions, Hainan noodles, Wenchang chicken, seafood, qingbuliang and zaopocu. Use practical quality checks:
- At laobacha, choose a busy table-service room with visible steaming baskets and order a small spread before adding more.
- Hainan noodles should be assembled to order; ask whether the bowl is dry-mixed or broth-based.
- Wenchang chicken is texture-led and may be served cooler than expected. Confirm portion size before ordering a whole or half bird.
- For seafood, establish species, price unit, live or cleaned weight and cooking charge before the kitchen receives it.
- Qingbuliang varies from coconut-milk dessert to sweeter iced mixtures. Ask what the base is if dairy or sugar matters.
Where to stay
- Qilou / Longhua old city: best for evening street life and a short first visit; confirm vehicle access on pedestrian lanes.
- Guoxing Avenue: practical for Hainan Museum, Five Lords and modern city transport; less atmospheric at the door.
- Binhai Avenue / Evergreen Park: best for open waterfront and business hotels; verify the exact distance to the old city.
- Meilan Airport area: use for an early flight or short transit only, not as the default sightseeing base.

Arrival and onward travel
Haikou Meilan International Airport connects directly to the island rail corridor. Haikou East, Haikou and Meilan stations serve different journeys; verify the station name before buying. Do not assume every Hainan destination is a short taxi from Haikou. Sanya, Wenchang and Qionghai are separate bases or rail trips. Cross-strait ferries and vehicle transport can be affected by wind; check the relevant port notice on the day.
