Chongqing Grand Theatre and the illuminated river skyline, a public drone-show viewing area

Chongqing drone light show: the 2026 calendar

The “New Rhythm Chongqing” drone show takes place over the core Two Rivers, Four Riverbanks area. The city has published dates month by month rather than guaranteeing one repeating weekly timetable for the whole year. The calendar below brings every official 2026 notice available by September 19, 2026 into one page.

October, November and December remain unannounced. A Saturday pattern in earlier months is not evidence that a later Saturday will have a show.

The year contains several exceptions that a simple “every Saturday” summary would miss:

  • the New Year show began on December 31, 2025 and continued into January 1;
  • the Spring Festival period ran nightly from February 15–22;
  • April 22 and May 13 were separately announced extra shows;
  • regular May shows after May 15 were moved from the earlier published 21:00 time to 20:30 in a later official time adjustment;
  • May 9, June 6 and June 13 were explicitly cancelled in monthly notices;
  • the June 9 and September 15 notices identified special shows without publishing a start time in the monthly calendar.

A newer official change always takes precedence. Weather, flight safety, major events and crowd management can still alter a confirmed performance. Check the city notice and local same-day alerts before travelling to the riverfront.

What “unannounced” means

“Unannounced” is not the same as cancelled. It means the available city notices do not yet provide a date. Do not book a hotel, change a train or choose a river-view restaurant on the assumption that the earlier Saturday pattern will continue.

This full-year layout reduces routine monthly checking: past months remain visible for reference, confirmed future dates stand in the same table, and the remaining months say plainly that no dates were available at the verification date. Only a new official notice should change those rows.

Choose a viewing bank before leaving your hotel

The city repeatedly names Chaotianmen, Jiangbeizui and Nanbin Road as viewing areas. None is a reserved seat, and no bank is guaranteed to face every word or figure in the choreography. Your usable view depends on the show design, weather, trees, building lights and temporary crowd controls.

Jiangbeizui and the Grand Theatre side

The public area around Chongqing Grand Theatre gives broad river space and a Yuzhong skyline backdrop. It is the strongest general choice when you also want Hongya Cave and Qiansimen Bridge in the scene. Longer lenses can compress the skyline, but some formation text may face another direction.

Use the Chongqing Grand Theatre Square metro area as the arrival anchor, then follow event barriers and staff toward the approved riverfront. Do not follow an old “secret third floor” pin into a car park or controlled building.

Chaotianmen and the river junction

Chaotianmen works when your evening already centres on Raffles City and the meeting of the rivers. It is convenient but can become very crowded because visitors funnel through a limited number of exits. Identify the metro route before the show and keep away from closed quay edges.

This bank is a poor choice for a last-minute cross-city arrival. Temporary traffic controls can make taxi drop-off and pickup much less convenient than the map suggests.

Nanbin Road and Danzishi

Nanbin Road offers a broad view back toward the Yuzhong skyline. It suits travellers staying on the south bank or visiting Danzishi, but the long waterfront creates many visually similar pins. Choose a legal public promenade section with a clear way back to a metro station or main road. A restaurant terrace is useful only when its booking explicitly permits show viewing; a table does not guarantee an unobstructed sky view.

How early to arrive

There is no single arrival time that works for every bank and holiday. On an ordinary scheduled Saturday, arrive early enough to inspect the event boundary in daylight and find a position without blocking circulation. Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and special themed shows require a larger buffer.

Use this sequence:

  1. Confirm the date and start time in the newest official notice.
  2. Choose one bank and one arrival station. Do not plan to “check both sides.”
  3. Save the return station and one alternative exit before mobile service becomes congested.
  4. Arrive while staff directions and closed areas are still easy to see.
  5. After the show, walk away from the narrowest riverfront exit before requesting a car.

Families should agree on a meeting point away from the front rail. Carry a charged phone and keep children beside an adult during the post-show crowd movement.

Photographing the show without losing the skyline

A phone can capture the show if you protect the highlights. Tap the bright formation, lower exposure slightly, and hold the phone steady. Avoid digital zoom; record a short video at 1×, then make a few still frames after the formation reaches its full shape.

With a camera, a moderate wide angle keeps the drone formation and skyline together. A long lens can isolate a figure, but it is easy to crop an unexpected formation or lose the river context. Do not place a tripod where it narrows the walking route, and do not attach equipment to public barriers.

The city's notices identify the core area as protected airport airspace and prohibit unauthorised personal drone flights. Leave your own drone at home.

Build it into a Chongqing evening

Do not put a tight cross-river transfer immediately before the scheduled start. A workable plan uses one nearby attraction and one viewing bank:

  • Jiangbeizui plan: early Hongya Cave visit, cross with plenty of time, then remain around the Grand Theatre side.
  • Chaotianmen plan: late-afternoon Raffles City and river-junction walk, then stay on the same side for the show.
  • South-bank plan: Longmenhao or Danzishi before sunset, dinner nearby, then walk to the approved Nanbin Road viewing area.

On a night without a show, the Chongqing photo-spots guide provides two complete public-viewpoint routes. The two-day Chongqing itinerary is the larger trip framework; move its evening block only after your show date is confirmed.
