Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden: living collections and rainforest in one day
The Chinese Academy of Sciences' Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is the prefecture's strongest all-day attraction. In Menglun, the West Garden presents living collections and specialist horticulture, while the East Garden opens into tropical rainforest and the more demanding Green Stone Forest branch. Choose one side or combine both according to your interest and walking energy.
Choose the day you want
| Route | Best for | Time and effort |
|---|---|---|
| West only | first-time plant interpretation, specialist gardens, older visitors and an adjustable day | official estimate about 2.5 hours; longer with interpretation and photography |
| West + East rainforest | the strongest balanced first visit | protect 4–5 hours plus transport; East vehicle is important |
| West + rainforest + Green Stone Forest | confident walkers who deliberately want the harder East branch | full day; steps and humid climbing make this the cut-first branch |
| Official night walk | guided insects and nocturnal ecology | separate timed guided product; weather can cancel it |
Visitor reports agree on the decision structure even when they disagree on value: West is easier to interpret, the East rainforest gives the lower-effort forest core, and Green Stone Forest adds material climbing. Do not buy “all areas” merely because they share one map.

Current official baseline
Checked on August 20, 2026, the garden's official visitor page lists:
- CNY 80 adult admission;
- CNY 50 for a West vehicle, CNY 50 for an East vehicle or CNY 100 for both;
- vehicle service from 08:00 to 18:00;
- an official direct coach between Gaozhuang's tourism service centre and the garden;
- official ticket, vehicle and guided night-walk booking through the garden mini-program, with Trip.com among named authorised partners.
These are date-stamped baselines, not promises. Peak routes can change, the night walk requires a professional guide and extreme weather cancels it. The official page describes mainland-ID validation but does not clearly document an identical passport flow. Test the official/authorised channel early and contact the garden when the document field fails.
Use the vehicle intelligently
The official route gives West Garden fixed stops and uses a vehicle to reach the East Garden's walking entrances. A vehicle ticket reduces long connectors; it does not eliminate walking inside individual gardens. Visitor reports warn that a fast guided/vehicle sequence can skip plants between stops, while walking all of West in tropical heat can exhaust the energy needed for East.
For a balanced first visit:
- Start in West with one interpretive collection cluster.
- Decide at the transfer point whether heat, rain and energy support East.
- In East, protect the rainforest segment.
- Cut Green Stone Forest before rushing the return.

Transport from Jinghong
Amap's planning baseline from Gaozhuang is about 55 km/47 minutes by car without live traffic. Its normal transit result was much slower and involved nearly 2 km of walking. Confirm the garden's current direct coach and written return time rather than relying on a generic bus result or an informal driver.
Do not place an evening flight or train immediately behind a full-garden day. The internal transfer, peak queues, rain and road traffic all consume the apparent margin.
Research-site conduct
The official entry rules prohibit picking flowers or fruit, climbing plants, entering water and catching animals. Stay out of unsigned research areas, never collect seeds and do not treat a scientific collection as free souvenir material. Night visits must remain with the official guide.
