Shanghai Museum: choose a building before choosing objects

Shanghai Museum now operates two major buildings with different visitor jobs. The East building in Pudong is the default for broad ancient-Chinese-art collections and a free, multi-hour visit. The People's Square building is currently a paid special-exhibition venue rather than the old permanent-gallery circuit. A guide that simply says “go to Shanghai Museum” can now send you to the wrong district and product.

Current building and ticket boundaries

The museum's actively maintained visitor notice, checked 18 August 2026, gives the following baseline:

  • East building: 10:00–18:00, last admission 17:00; closed Tuesday except national holidays. Individual visitors currently enter without a general advance reservation using an accepted original identity document at the B1 east entrance. The Ancient Civilizations Exploration Palace and Digital Gallery still require separate advance booking, and paid temporary exhibitions keep their own tickets.
  • People's Square building: 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00; closed Monday except national holidays. From 9 July 2026 to 14 November 2027, the building is devoted to On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas. It does not show its former permanent-gallery circuit during this period, and every visitor needs the dated paid exhibition ticket.

Use the live Shanghai Museum visitor notice immediately before travel. Holiday openings, capacity controls, special rooms and accepted foreign-document procedures can override the baseline. Carry the original passport used for any purchase or reservation; if an automated workflow does not support it, use the museum's staffed service rather than entering another identity type.

A focused East-building route

Allow three to four hours, not a room-by-room full day. Start with one material history—bronze or ceramics—then add either the Shanghai archaeology sequence or a gallery such as currency, painting and calligraphy, seals, jade or Jiangnan crafts according to the live floor plan. Finish with one smaller category while concentration remains good.

The East building is the stronger choice for a first-time visitor who wants the museum's collection breadth. Families should reserve the interactive room only when its age, language and time slot fit; otherwise choose three visual objects and a shorter two-hour circuit. Never promise that a named masterpiece is displayed: rotation, conservation and loans can move individual objects.

When People's Square is the better choice

Choose People's Square only if the Americas exhibition is itself a priority or its central location fits a shorter city day. Check the official ticket screen for date, session, price category, concession document, refund and re-entry rules; do not describe the paid special ticket as admission to the old permanent collections. The building's distinctive round-and-square exterior remains visible from public space, but that architectural stop is not a substitute for an exhibition ticket.

Transport, access and pairing

Save the full building name and address. People's Square uses metro Lines 1, 2 and 8 in central Huangpu; the East building is at 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong, near Line 2's Shanghai Science and Technology Museum area. Do not depend on an old inter-building shuttle timetable. Treat them as separate destinations and use live metro navigation.

The East building pairs naturally with one Pudong stop, not with a rushed return to People's Square. The central building can pair with People's Square, Nanjing Road or an urban-history walk. Both buildings involve long indoor distances; ask the information desk about lifts, wheelchairs, accessible toilets, seating, bags and the shortest exit before beginning. Keep screens dim, follow object-specific photography signs and give crowded cases room.

Verdict

For a first broad collection visit in 2026, choose Shanghai Museum East. Choose People's Square for the dated paid Americas exhibition. The current official notice—not an old branch guide—controls opening, tickets, documents and gallery access.
