Xiangshawan
Xiangshawan (响沙湾, Whistling Dune Bay) is a highly managed desert destination at the eastern edge of the Kubuqi. The official resort separates a sightseeing port, two leisure islands and several overnight resort islands. A general “Xiangshawan ticket” does not automatically mean access to every activity, camel ride, performance or hotel zone.
The best day begins with one choice: see the dunes, use an activity island, or stay in the desert. Trying to buy the difference after arrival is where confusion, queues and unexpected charges accumulate.
Match the zone to your group
Xiangshawan Port / sightseeing area is the leanest product. It suits travellers who want a cableway approach, open sand and photography without committing to an island package. Sliding, camels and larger vehicles can still be separately priced. This is not automatically the best value for a child who expects a day of rides.
Xiansha Island (仙沙休闲岛) concentrates thrill and amusement products: off-road-style vehicles, coasters, zip lines and stage entertainment may form part of a named package. It fits older children and adults who meet height and health rules. Popular third-party vehicles and camel rides may remain outside the island bundle.
Yuesha Island (悦沙休闲岛) is generally the calmer family choice, built around trains, sand play, performances and seasonal water-oriented activities. Water features and food can be limited outside peak season; do not buy it solely from a summer photograph.
Liansha, Fusha and other resort islands are overnight products with their own guest transport, meals and activities. Hotel access is not a universal fast pass to the leisure islands. Compare each property's written inclusions and check-in transfer.
If your group splits between thrill rides and relaxed sand time, one island rarely satisfies everyone. Either divide the adults or choose the sightseeing product and accept fewer activities.
Read the package like a transport contract
The route can include a numbered cableway, sand yacht or shuttle, island connector and final cableway back. Before paying, capture a current list of:
- the named entry cableway and whether it is return;
- the exact island or islands;
- the connector between islands;
- every included activity and performance;
- explicit exclusions such as camels, Bigfoot vehicles, sliding, socks, photos or food;
- child height, age and document rules;
- last transport back to the visitor centre.
Recent visitor evidence shows why this matters. One family encountered conflicting child rules at a third-party activity and camel counter. Another found the Yuesha facilities comfortable but food choice extremely limited in the quieter season. Positive Xiansha reports still separated the basic island bundle from premium vehicles and sliding. Treat the posted board and QR product on your date as controlling; photograph the terms before entering.

Queue strategy matters more than a long checklist
The Ordos government recorded a new single-day visitor high during the May 2026 holiday, and recent summer visitors also report long activity queues. Arrive before the selected opening window, take the required transfer first and do your top eligible activity before browsing photo stops.
On Xiansha, pick two or three priorities rather than crossing the island after every short queue. On Yuesha, check show and train times once, then leave room for unstructured sand play. If the queue for a separately priced vehicle is longer than the ride is worth, the dunes are still the principal attraction.
One leisure island fills a proper day once road travel and transfers are included. A two-island ticket only makes sense with an early arrival, confirmed connector and realistic stamina. It is poor value if a young child misses many height rules.
Prepare for exposure, not just heat
Sun, wind, dry air and blowing sand can operate together. Wear closed shoes, high-coverage sun protection and glasses; use a sealed pouch for the phone and keep interchangeable-lens cameras closed when sand is moving. A lightweight face covering helps travellers prone to dust irritation. Carry water, but check what can pass the entrance.
Thunderstorms, high wind, low visibility and maintenance can suspend cableways or rides. In summer, use indoor shows and food breaks through the hottest period. In shoulder season, pack insulation even when daytime is warm. Never climb beyond managed boundaries for an empty-dune photograph.
Choose the right base
Xiangshawan is in Dalad Banner, north of the central Ordos visitor clusters and comparatively close to Baotou. Confirm a round-trip driver, hotel transfer or current public transport before committing. Ride-hailing availability at the city end does not guarantee a return at the desert closing time.
