Arctic Village
Arctic Village (北极村, Běijí Cūn) is the easiest serviced base for Mohe's northern-border landscape, with riverfront walks, themed markers and lodging inside a managed scenic area.
How to visit
Use the riverfront and a few meaningful latitude or border-history stops, then leave time for ordinary village streets and forest light. Do not spend the day collecting every 'northernmost' sign.
A useful first circuit is the visitor entry, one border-history or latitude display, an open riverfront section and the village streets around your lodging. In winter, make every outdoor segment short enough that you can warm up before fingers and toes become numb. In summer, the long daylight supports an unhurried evening walk, but mosquitoes and sudden rain replace extreme cold as the practical constraints.
The Heilong River forms an international border here. Stay on signed public paths, respect photography notices and never treat frozen water as an informal crossing or safe shortcut. Ice thickness and border controls are not established by seeing other people on the river.
Arrange the stay and scenic entry separately
A room inside the village does not automatically include scenic-area admission. Before reserving, ask whether the quoted total covers entrance tickets for everyone, where you first check in, and how luggage reaches the property. If arriving by car, confirm the current vehicle-entry or pickup arrangement rather than assuming a room booking lets you drive through the gate.
The regional price approval, dated 26 June 2025 and published on 3 July, sets adult admission at ¥88, taking effect after a six-month public-notice period. Confirm the live ticket terms and any separately charged scenic transport before paying; lodging and optional activities are separate budget decisions.
Give the village its own overnight block
On arrival, settle entry and luggage first, then choose a short village walk and one open riverside or border-history stop. Keep time for a meal and an indoor break instead of trying to collect every “northernmost” marker before dark. Use the following morning for anything you particularly want to revisit, subject to the day’s access and weather.
A previous winter traveler stayed in Beihong after the First Bay/Wusuli day, then moved to Arctic Village the next day. That split is a useful alternative to sleeping here every night and repeatedly retracing long roads. It is not a timetable to copy after a delayed train arrival: agree each day’s endpoint with the driver and keep your final return to Mohe city clear of unnecessary detours.
What changes the experience
The village is commercial and themed, especially in peak winter. That does not erase the landscape, but travelers seeking solitude should add Beihong or a quieter forest route.
Do not book the trip primarily for an aurora. Mohe's latitude, dark skies and northern branding do not make northern lights predictable; cloud, solar activity and the viewing direction all matter. Treat a clear night, stars or frost as the available experience and regard an aurora as an unpromised bonus.
The other seasonal temptation is “throwing hot water” for a frozen cloud. It can scald the person throwing it or people downwind. Do not perform it near crowds, buildings or vehicles, and skip it unless local staff provide a controlled setting and safe instructions.
Tickets and access
The municipal page places Arctic Village 77 km from Mohe city. Confirm current admission, internal vehicle, lodging pickup and cold-weather notices. Check the current official source before setting out.
Mohe railway station or airport is therefore not the village gate. On an arrival day, allow for the city-to-village transfer, ticket formalities, winter road conditions and the early loss of daylight. A shared vehicle may wait for other passengers; a private driver should still provide a vehicle identity, pickup point and road-closure terms.
Carry the address and phone number of your accommodation in Chinese. Mobile coverage is useful but should not be the only way to find a rural pickup in extreme cold. Keep medication, power bank, water and one warm layer in the cabin rather than buried in a luggage compartment.
Cold-weather baseline
Use a moisture-wicking base layer, insulated middle layer and windproof outer layer, with warm boots, dry socks, gloves, hat and face protection. Fashion boots with smooth soles are a poor match for packed snow. Check the day's temperature, wind and official road notices, then shorten the plan before anyone in the group loses dexterity or stops feeling their feet.
Fit it into the trip
Return to the Mohe guide and pair it with Beihong Village or Longjiang First Bay and Wusuli Shoal only when transport and energy keep the day coherent.
