Maling River Canyon
Maling River Canyon (马岭河峡谷) is Xingyi's physical counterpoint to Wanfenglin. You descend from the city rim into a narrow, wet corridor of waterfalls, calcified cliff deposits and suspension bridges. The route is not difficult because of distance alone: stairs, spray, narrow two-way sections and the climb back to street level decide how it feels.
Do not copy a gate direction blindly
Current visitor reports conflict about whether Dachaiwo (Gate 2) or Xiaoqingshan (Gate 1) is the “easy” starting point. Both can be correct under different conditions. Xiaoqingshan has the sightseeing elevator when it is operating; Dachaiwo's connection has been reported as stair-dependent. Temporary one-way control, queue direction or a closed exit can reverse the advantage.
At the ticket office, ask three questions before descending:
- Are both gates and the full canyon-floor path open today?
- Is the Xiaoqingshan elevator operating, and can it be used in the direction you need?
- Where can your taxi or driver legally collect you at the chosen exit?
Only then choose between a through-route and a shorter return route.
Full route or core out-and-back
Full crossing: use one gate to descend, follow the signed canyon path past Sea Lion suspension bridge and the waterfall corridor, spend time at Wanma Benteng, then exit from the other gate. Allow two to three hours in the canyon, plus queues and surface transport. This gives the strongest sense of scale but commits you to the exit climb and pickup plan.
Shorter core route: descend from Xiaoqingshan using the operating elevator or stairs, walk to the Sea Lion bridge and Wanma Benteng platform, then return to the same gate. It repeats a short section but avoids the least rewarding tail and an uncertain stair-heavy exit. This is the better choice for families, visitors with limited stamina or a rainy day—provided the elevator is confirmed for the return.

The bridge-level panorama above the gorge is a separate surface view, not a substitute for the canyon floor. Add it before or after only if your driver can stop legally and visibility is clear. Morning fog sometimes obscures the depth; treat that as weather, not a fixed timetable.
Wet-weather reality
Rain makes the waterfalls more forceful and the canyon more atmospheric, but it also amplifies every route risk. Wear proper grip shoes, use a rain jacket that leaves both hands free, and protect your phone. Do not wear loose sandals. Turn back if staff close a section, water crosses the walking surface or crowding prevents safe passage.
The official admission rules prohibit entering closed areas, climbing barriers, swimming or playing in the river. They also cap the number of people on the suspension bridge and in the elevator, so queues are a safety control rather than wasted time. Drones, pets and open flames are prohibited; insect repellent is useful in summer.

Tickets, hours and pickup
The operator currently publishes a general 08:00–17:30 opening baseline, but it issued a separate summer entry adjustment in August 2026. Read the newest notice for your date and do not assume the general hours override a seasonal rule or storm closure.
Check whether your product includes admission only or also the sightseeing elevator; a round-trip elevator option does not make the entire canyon step-free. Carry the original passport used for booking. Compare current Maling River Canyon options on Trip.com, then confirm the live route at the official operator site or hotline.
Surface traffic control can leave ride-hailing pickup away from a gate. Pin the agreed meeting point before entering and keep the driver's number offline. Use the toilet and buy water before descending; services on the canyon floor are limited.

Fit it into Xingyi
Give the canyon a half-day and recovery time in your Xingyi plan. Pair it with a quiet city evening, not a deadline-sensitive departure. Wanfenglin is the easier next-day landscape; Wanfeng Lake suits travellers who prefer sitting on the water to another stair route.
