Dongshan Island: choose Tongling or the beach bays
Dongshan Island (东山岛, Dōngshān Dǎo) works best as a selective coast-and-heritage stay. Tongling and Nanmen put old streets, Wind-Moving Rock and evening food within the easiest visitor cluster; Maluan and Jinluan suit a slower beach-side stay. One overnight is the balanced first visit. Two nights add weather flexibility and another chosen bay without forcing a complete island loop.

The Sufeng Mountain coast shows Dongshan's larger landscape, but the view does not establish current road access, a safe swimming area or an open island circuit.
Choose the base by the experience
| Base | Best for | Trade-off to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Tongling / Nanmen | Heritage streets, Wind-Moving Rock, Guandi culture, food and evening walking | Some lanes and lodging approaches are steep; confirm luggage access |
| Maluan Bay | A slower beach-oriented stay with easier road access to one chosen coast block | Beach operation, bathing areas and return transport remain live fields |
| Jinluan Bay | Quiet coast time and a conditional sunrise attempt | Fewer convenient food and heritage options; sunrise and reflective water are never guaranteed |
For the heritage side, compare Dongshan old-town stays on Trip.com. The search is a lodging zone in Dongshan County, not a transfer or attraction package; confirm the property pin, slope, luggage access and international-guest terms.
Use one selective day or a two-day stay
One selective day
Choose Tongling heritage + Nanmen Bay when architecture, food and walking are the priority. Alternatively, choose one beach/coast product with return transport arranged before departure. A full-island checklist adds road, tide and return pressure without making the day more coherent.
One overnight
Use the arrival day for Tongling, the exact Wind-Moving Rock scenic layer and Nanmen's later atmosphere. Use the next morning for one chosen bay or coast branch, then leave a real margin for the mainland return.
Two nights
Add a slower morning and one weather fallback. This is the better shape for travelers who want both Tongling heritage and a beach-side block without relying on perfect tides, low wind or a guaranteed sunrise.
Make Wind-Moving Rock the heritage anchor

Wind-Moving Rock (风动石) gives the island day a clear historic and geological anchor. Pair the landmark with the currently open scenic-area layer and the adjacent Guandi cultural context rather than treating the ticket as an all-island pass.
The current Trip.com ticket is the exact adult Fengdongshi scenic-area admission. It does not include Yunxiao transfer, island transport, Sufeng Mountain, beaches, boats, meals or cultural events. Check the exact Fengdongshi admission on Trip.com, then confirm the current price, cancellation, entry method and document terms at checkout.

The wider view helps explain the landmark's garden and coast setting. Current construction, escalator status, internal paths, temple access and re-entry remain separate live questions; follow the visitor-centre instructions on the day.
Arrive through Yunxiao, then complete the island transfer
Yunxiao Station (云霄站) is on the mainland. AMap's model checked on 23 August 2026 places it about 36 km / 41 minutes by car from the Dongshan tourism distribution centre in Tongling. The map's transit candidates do not prove a timetable, fare, luggage rule or last service.
From the Tongling anchor, the Wind-Moving Rock Visitor Centre is about 1.5 km / 20 minutes on foot in the same dated model. Tongling to Maluan Bay is a separate road move of roughly 3.2 km / 9 minutes by car; Maluan to Jinluan is another 6 km / 12 minutes. These are scale clues, not beach entrances or transport promises.
Let weather choose the coast layer
Wind, lightning, typhoons, heat, tides and waves can change exposed coast, swimming and marine products quickly. Check the current beach boundary, lifeguard or closure notice before entering the water. Boats, sandbars and offshore islands require a current legal operator and landing contract; a map pin or social post is not permission.
Road transport is the simplest default between separated bases. If considering a scooter or e-bike, verify the current licence, helmet, insurance, parking and rental terms rather than building the itinerary around an assumed island loop.
Use the Zhangzhou guide for the wider base sequence. Keep Baitang Bay Ancient Crater as a separate Longhai geology day, not an island stop.
