Zhangzhou: choose an old-city stay, a Dongshan overnight or a geology coast
Zhangzhou is rewarding precisely because it is not one compact checklist. The urban old city offers Minnan lanes, timber architecture and a daylight-to-evening food rhythm; Dongshan Island combines Tongling heritage with a selective coast stay; Longhai Baitang Bay is a focused volcanic-geology choice. Two days suit the city itself. Three days make room for a proper Dongshan overnight. Four let you add one deliberate coast or active branch.
The three-day old-city-to-island route
The flagship uses one urban day, one base change and two selective island days. Nanmen and Maluan are route-only stops with exact map points, transport context and location-specific project-hosted images; they remain useful without forcing separate thin guides.

This view is from the Sufeng Mountain coast on Dongshan Island, one of the separate choices within Zhangzhou prefecture—not Zhangzhou's urban centre or proof of a currently open island road.
Choose the base before the itinerary
| Product | Best for | Strong first shape |
|---|---|---|
| Zhangzhou urban / Ancient City | Minnan streets, the Confucian Temple and a compact food-and-culture stay | Daylight architecture → midday rest or interior → evening street atmosphere |
| Tongling / Nanmen, Dongshan | Heritage streets, Wind-Moving Rock and walkable evening food | One overnight with a selective heritage-and-coast day |
| Maluan / Jinluan, Dongshan | A slower beach-side stay and one chosen coastal product | Arrange road transport; keep sunrise and swimming conditional |
| Longhai Baitang Bay | Basalt, ancient-crater interpretation and a compact geology visit | Exact crater gate → currently signed public layer → independent return |
For the urban branch, compare Zhangzhou stays on Trip.com and verify the exact district, station access and international-guest terms. For Dongshan, compare Dongshan County stays; the countywide search covers more than Tongling and the beach bays, so map-check the property before payment.
Build a two-, three- or four-day trip
- Two days: keep one urban base. Give Zhangzhou Ancient City a slow architecture, food and evening sequence, then choose Yun Dong Yan or another unhurried city layer for day two.
- Three days: spend one day in urban Zhangzhou, transfer toward Dongshan, then give the island one night and one selective coast/heritage day. This is the shortest strong first-time multi-base plan.
- Four days: keep the urban day and two Dongshan days, then add Baitang Bay Ancient Crater or a weather-flex day. Baitang is a choice, not a compulsory stop between bases.

The diagram is a product chooser, not a geographic map. It does not promise a shuttle, island loop or shared admission. Follow the current operator signs and live transport instructions for the branch you choose.
Urban Zhangzhou: let the old city set the rhythm
The strongest urban day starts with architecture while the light is useful, uses food or one currently open interior as a rest break, then returns to the public streets later. The Ancient City is free to enter; museums, performances and managed interiors can have their own hours or reservation rules.
The compact external walking spine is the Ancient City Visitor Centre → Zhangzhou Confucian Temple → Hong Kong Road → Zhongshan Park. AMap models checked on 23 August 2026 place those three walking legs at roughly 4, 5 and 6 minutes. They establish a practical cluster, not guaranteed access through every courtyard or lane.
Dongshan: choose heritage or beach emphasis
Dongshan Island works best with at least one night. Tongling and Nanmen favor evening walking, food and the Wind-Moving Rock heritage layer. Maluan and Jinluan favor a slower coast stay but create more road-transport decisions.
Yunxiao Station is on the mainland, not on Dongshan. AMap's dated model places it about 36 km / 41 minutes by car from the Tongling distribution-centre anchor. Treat that as scale only: it does not prove a bus timetable, luggage acceptance or the last return.
Keep the two volcanic-coast products separate
Longhai's Baitang Bay and Zhangpu's Volcanic Island are about 5.1 km / 11 minutes by road between their selected external nodes, yet they use different gates, operators and tickets.
- Choose Baitang Bay Ancient Crater for the compact geology proposition. Its exact admission does not include hot springs or the separately priced activities named in the current ticket contract.
- Choose Zhangpu Volcanic Island only for its current commercial product. The current Trip.com ticket is specifically admission plus Monument Valley and Rainbow Mountain Love Castle—not a national-geopark umbrella ticket or Baitang cross-entry. Check that exact Zhangpu combo on Trip.com, including current eligibility, weather rules and document terms.
Yun Dong Yan: the active urban half day
Yun Dong Yan (云洞岩) is a useful contrast when you want steps, inscriptions and a more physical outing without changing to a coastal base. Choose an ordinary marked overview or a more active currently open branch; do not treat a user-drawn long track as the standard visit.
The Ancient City visitor centre and Yun Dong Yan are separate urban jobs—AMap's dated road model is about 11.2 km / 24 minutes by car. Wet rock, narrow passages, heat and rain can change the winning route, so carry water, wear grippy shoes and follow the current marked public path.
Arrival logic and weather flexibility
Zhangzhou Station sits outside the old-city core. AMap's 23 August 2026 model places it about 12.4 km / 33 minutes by car from the Ancient City Visitor Centre. The Zhangpu and Longhai coast nodes are each roughly an hour's road journey from the station in the same dated model, while Dongshan is normally approached through a separate mainland-to-island transfer.
Typhoons, strong wind, lightning, heat, tides and waves can change beaches, exposed coast and mountain branches quickly. Keep one movable outdoor block, and check the exact venue, shore and return status on the day rather than letting a map pin or ticket page stand in for an operating notice.
Illustrated guides
The satisfying first decision is simple: one urban heritage stay, one Dongshan overnight, then an optional geology or active branch if the trip has room.
