Fujian in 9 days: coast, tulou, maritime city and mountain

Use Xiamen → one tulou cluster → Quanzhou → Wuyishan. Nine days is the realistic minimum; ten days adds a weather buffer in Wuyishan or another Quanzhou day.

Open the day-by-day 9-day itinerary.

Why this order works

Xiamen is the easiest flight gateway, a tulou visit is the road-dependent interruption, Quanzhou returns the trip to the rail network, and Wuyishan finishes with a two-day landscape block. Public-transport trip reports consistently find that Wuyishan is a geographic detour, not a casual Xiamen day trip, while tulou access is the least standardized handoff.

Choose one tulou cluster

Do not book “Fujian tulou” without a named cluster. Nanjing works well for Tianluokeng/Yuchanglou/Taxia combinations; Yongding offers other major groups. A private car, current group tour or explicit bus plan should state the pickup, included buildings, luggage handling and final drop-off. One overnight removes the worst pressure and gives the landscape quieter hours.

Getting to the Nanjing tulou without a car

The L5 tourist bus leaves Zhangzhou city (Qiaocun, west of the old town) for the Fujian Tulou (Nanjing) visitor center. It takes about 1.5 hours and costs ¥20 each way. In autumn 2026 it ran:

WeekdaysWeekends and holidays
From the city08:00 and 14:0008:00, 09:30, 14:00 and 15:00
From the scenic area11:00 and 17:0011:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 17:30

It sells by seat, so arrive early.

A same-day loop.

  1. Take the scenic shuttle (about ¥15 return) from the visitor center to Tianluokeng. Look down on the "four dishes and a soup" cluster from the upper viewpoint, then visit the leaning Yuchang Building and Taxia village.
  2. Ride local bus 6 (¥3–4, every 35–40 minutes) to Yunshuiyao for Huaiyuan Building, the old banyans and the waterwheel.
  3. Be back at the bus 6 stop by about 16:20 to make the last L5.

Tickets. Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao each cost about ¥90, and a combined ticket is cheaper. Some buildings charge about ¥10 to climb upstairs.

Touts at Nanjing station. Unlicensed drivers at Nanjing high-speed station gather shared rides at around ¥30 a head to Tianluokeng plus extras. Travelers report doubled prices after "pre-booked" rides are turned into shared cars. Agree the full price, the stops and the return before getting in.

A free alternative. Meilin (梅林) old town nearby has free-entry tulou, including the 1680 Nanqing Building and Wande Building, and a quick hill viewpoint. Reach it from the visitor center on bus 6A, the Meilin line rather than plain bus 6.

The base plan

  • Xiamen, 3 nights: Gulangyu gets one ferry-dependent day; the south coast and old port get separate clusters.
  • Tulou area, 1 night: one named group, not several distant photo stops.
  • Quanzhou, 2 nights: one full old-city and maritime-heritage day.
  • Wuyishan, 2 nights: one mountain route and one Nine-Bend River or tea-country day.

Critical bookings

Reserve the correct Gulangyu visitor ferry with the passport used for travel. At Wuyishan, distinguish scenic admission, sightseeing shuttles and any Nine-Bend rafting slot. Rain, high water and operating notices can change the order.

Nine-Bend River bamboo rafts.

  • Where to book: the official "福建武夷山旅游发展" mini-program. In peak season, slots must be grabbed about a week ahead.
  • Tickets: a raft-only ticket was about ¥130 in 2026. Raft plus scenic-area bus was about ¥200, and the bus is only needed if you also hike the mountain sights.
  • When to go: the first departure, around 06:40, is cool and misty with no queue.
  • On the raft: rafts leave once eight people have gathered, the front row has the best view, and the boatman's commentary is included with no tip. Wear sandals, as feet often get wet.

After landing.

  1. Walk Song Street to Wuyi Palace.
  2. Take free local bus 9 back to the raft pier or bus 16 to the Sangu resort area.
  3. Ignore the taxi touts at the exit. The scenic area is a network of subareas; it is not one summit.

Compare the long rail legs on Trip.com, then verify whether the issued station is Wuyishan North, Nanpingshi or another station shown on the ticket. A city name is not enough for the hotel transfer.

What to cut

With eight days, remove either the tulou overnight or one Xiamen day. Do not reduce Wuyishan to a late arrival plus a single rushed morning. With ten days, add a second Quanzhou day or a Wuyishan weather buffer—not another province-wide detour.

Final decision

Choose this route for architectural history, living religious heritage and a mountain finish. Choose a coast-only Xiamen–Quanzhou trip if you want easy rail logistics. The full route succeeds when the tulou road day and Wuyishan detour are treated as real transport, not blank space between photos.
