Guangzhou skyline and river on a short transit visit

Guangzhou Layover Guide

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN) can support a central-city outing on a long connection, but the terminal must be confirmed first. Terminal 3 opened for international operations in 2026, and all former Terminal 1 flights moved there in May. Old guides that describe only Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are incomplete.

Entry Comes Before the Tour

You need a valid visa, ordinary visa-free entry or an eligible 240-hour transit. A 24-hour direct-transit passenger needs temporary entry permission to leave the restricted area. Keep the confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, passport and local route ready.

The Free Transit Tour: Verify the Terminal on Arrival

Guangzhou launched a free half-day tour for international transit travelers with layovers over eight hours. The published 2024 program departed at 08:30 from the International Arrivals Hall in Terminal 2, visited central landmarks and returned around 14:00. Passengers were asked to show a passport and connecting boarding pass at the “Transit-visa-free Tour in Guangzhou” desk.

That launch information predates Terminal 3's full international operation. Read the official Guangdong report, then ask airport staff for the live registration desk, route, quota and return time. Do not cross terminals on the assumption that the old T2 desk still controls every flight.

Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 Are Different Transfers

Terminal 2 connects directly to Airport North station on Metro Line 3. Terminal 3 currently uses an airport/intercity system and, for the metro connection described by Guangdong authorities, a shuttle between T3 Stop 74 and Gaozeng station. The airport increased that shuttle after the 2026 terminal move; hours and fares can change.

Check the boarding pass and the current airport-transfer guide. A taxi or ride-hailing pickup also uses terminal-specific signed zones. A driver waiting at the wrong terminal is not a small delay.

Eight to Twelve Hours: One Guangzhou Cluster

Choose the official tour when a seat, immigration clearance and return time are confirmed. For an independent route, choose one of these:

  • Modern Guangzhou: Huacheng Square, riverfront and an exterior Canton Tower view.
  • Historic Guangzhou: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall plus Yongqing Fang or Shamian, not all three.
  • Food-first stop: one dim sum meal near a reliable metro corridor, with the return train decided before ordering.

The Guangzhou destination guide helps cluster stops. Do not attempt a full Canton Tower attraction visit without a dated ticket and large return margin; compare the exact Trip.com Canton Tower product only after checking the official slot.

Two tested outings from CAN

Six hours on the ground: the river axis.

  • Getting there: Metro from Terminal 2 to Huacheng Avenue (exit B), about 75 minutes.
  • The walk: past the Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Library to a mall for lunch, then the metro back from Zhujiang New Town. That ride is also about an hour.
  • How long it took: one traveler whose bags were checked through landed at 12:10 and was back by 16:15.

Ten hours: old and new Guangzhou.

  1. Metro to Dongshankou for red-brick villas and a wonton-noodle lunch.
  2. Shamian Island.
  3. Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) on Wenchang Road for dim sum. Go earlier in the day, because the evening dim sum menu is short.
  4. Shangxiajiu.
  5. The riverside below Canton Tower at dusk.

Making it work.

  • Metro day pass: about ¥20 for 24 hours.
  • Bag storage: transfer passengers holding boarding passes for both flights, with a connection under 48 hours, can store bags free at Baiyun. Ask at the counters behind Island N on the departures level, 3F.
  • Early check-in: you can sometimes check in for the onward flight on the same day well before the usual three-hour window, then go out with nothing to carry.
  • Getting back: from Canton Tower station you can usually board a train toward Airport North (Terminal 2) without changing at Tiyu Xilu, even if the map app suggests it.

A 24-Hour Guangzhou Plan

  1. Transfer to a hotel near Zhujiang New Town, Beijing Road or a useful Line 3 interchange.
  2. Use the afternoon for Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and one nearby old-city district.
  3. Finish on the Huacheng Square river axis.
  4. Next morning, have dim sum close to the hotel and return directly to CAN.

Keep the last night in Guangzhou when the onward flight is early. Compare Guangzhou hotels on Trip.com by exact metro station and terminal transfer, not by a generic “city center” label.

Seventy-Two Hours: Guangzhou Plus One Neighbor

Two full days can support Guangzhou plus Foshan or one focused Shenzhen day. Hong Kong can be country/region C in a valid transit structure, but once you clear mainland exit control the Guangzhou segment is over.

For a Hong Kong continuation:

  • reserve the exact Guangzhou–Shenzhen or Guangzhou–West Kowloon train and station;
  • read the Hong Kong and Macau crossings guide;
  • carry any entry permission required for Hong Kong;
  • do not count a Hong Kong hotel as another night inside mainland China's transit period;
  • retain proof of the onward international sequence.

The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong route guide covers the full corridor. Trip.com train inventory is useful for live comparison, but the issued ticket and immigration rule control.

China Southern and Other Airline Benefits

Airline transit products can include accommodation, meal vouchers, baggage through-check or a city tour, but eligibility depends on ticket stock, connection length, route and booking channel. Ask the operating airline before travel and again at its transfer desk. Never promise yourself a free hotel or tour based only on the airline brand.

Abort the Outing When

  • immigration or baggage removes the planned buffer;
  • the tour desk cannot confirm terminal, seat and airport return;
  • thunderstorms, typhoon conditions or metro disruption affect the route;
  • the onward terminal or flight changes;
  • you would reach security later than the airline's stated deadline.

Guangzhou rewards a focused meal and one coherent district. A connection is not improved by turning it into a race across the Pearl River Delta.
