Maolan National Nature Reserve

Maolan (茂兰国家级自然保护区) is Libo's wilder choice: karst peaks, village roads, forest streams and unlit caves spread across a large protected landscape. It is not a single fenced circuit. The useful question is not “How do I cover Maolan?” but which authorised route can I confirm for today, and who is getting me back?

Choose the route before the ticket

For most first visits, choose one of three scales:

• Short forest-and-cave taste: pair the Qinglong stream area with Golden Lion Cave if both are open. Visitor reports put this in the roughly three-hour range once on site, but transfers can make it a half-day.
• Longer cave circuit: allow a substantial half-day with a local guide or operator who confirms the currently permitted caves, entrance and finish point.
• Funnel-forest hike: treat this as a full outdoor day, often described locally as six to eight hours. It needs route confirmation, an appropriate guide, food, water and an early start. It is not a spontaneous extension of the short route.

Do not enter an unsigned forest or cave track because it appears in an old post. Recent visitors consistently describe Maolan as lightly managed and locally routed. Rain, water level and conservation controls can change what is safe or permitted.

What the short route is really like

Qinglong's appeal is dense vegetation, clear running water and a less polished atmosphere than Xiaoqikong. Paths can be uneven and wet; the lack of railings or crowd infrastructure is part of the experience, not a small inconvenience. Wear grippy shoes and keep children within reach near water.

Golden Lion Cave may have a constructed path but no fixed lighting. Arrange a reliable headlamp before entry, carry a backup light, and do not depend on a phone torch. Bats may be present; keep quiet, do not use flash on wildlife and follow the guide's limits. Anyone uncomfortable with darkness, confined spaces or uneven steps should choose the stream route without the cave.

Transport, supplies and communication

Maolan is far more dispersed than Xiaoqikong. Arrange a driver, accommodation transfer or current sightseeing-vehicle plan before leaving Libo; write down the exact meeting place in Chinese and agree on the return time. “Maolan” alone is not a sufficient destination for a driver because village entrances and route starts differ.

Mobile signal, toilets and food are inconsistent away from the main villages. Carry enough water and a real snack for the planned duration, plus cash backup, rain protection, insect repellent and a small first-aid kit. Download your translation and map tools, then share the route and driver's contact with your accommodation. Do not count on English guidance.

The valley includes working settlements. Stay on the agreed access road and path, ask before photographing residents, and take all rubbish back out. A bridge or village view is a transition in the route, not permission to explore private lanes.

Booking and same-day checks

Before paying, confirm the exact route name, whether admission and internal transport are included, whether a guide is required, and whether cave lighting is supplied. A general attraction ticket does not guarantee entry to every forest or cave route. Check Maolan's current Trip.com listing, but use your guide, accommodation or reserve contact for the final route-opening and pickup decision.

After heavy rain, replace a cave or long forest hike with a confirmed short water-and-village route—or postpone Maolan. Never let a prepaid transfer pressure you onto an unsafe path.

Fit it into Libo

Give Maolan its own day from Libo. Xiaoqikong is the better first choice for travellers who want clear signage, internal buses and a predictable chain of sights. Maolan is stronger for confident walkers who value forest texture and can tolerate uncertain logistics. Daqikong is the compact alternative when you want a half-day gorge rather than an expedition-style outing.
