Anshun
Anshun is the useful base between Guiyang and Huangguoshu, not merely a station name. A balanced first visit gives Huangguoshu Waterfall a protected day, uses the city for food and recovery, and adds Tianlong Tunpu only when the road transfer and village visit fit.

This illustrative view conveys the waterfall landscape; water volume, trail access and crowd conditions may differ.
How many days
Two days work when you arrive early enough for an Anshun evening and reserve the next day for Huangguoshu. Three days let you add Tianlong Tunpu or a slower city-history block. Do not automatically add Dragon Palace: it is another managed scenic product with its own transfer, boat, cave and weather conditions.
A useful three-day structure
Day 1: arrive and understand the base
Check in near the old-city food area or a practical transport corridor. Walk one compact historic-and-food cluster, confirm the next morning's pickup and buy water or rain protection. Avoid crossing the city for several viral food queues.
Day 2: Huangguoshu only
Treat Doupotang, the main waterfall and Tianxingqiao as distinct sectors connected by a long scenic shuttle loop. A complete visit can fill the day. Keep Water Curtain Cave conditional on its current timed reservation, wet surfaces and the group's mobility. Protect the final shuttle and return to Anshun or the booked scenic-area hotel.
Day 3: Tianlong Tunpu or depart
Visit Tianlong for its living stone settlement and military-migration history, then return without adding another remote village by default. If the transfer is awkward, use the day for Anshun's urban history or continue to Guiyang, Libo or the next confirmed base.
The two planning anchors
Base and transport choices
Anshun West is the high-speed rail gateway. The city, Tianlong and Huangguoshu are separate road sectors, and a railway arrival does not place you at the waterfall entrance. Compare the current official scenic bus, a licensed tour and a private transfer by exact pickup, gate, return time and luggage policy.
Stay in Anshun for restaurants and onward rail. Stay near Huangguoshu only when an early entrance or a slower waterfall visit outweighs the hotel move. Check the property's exact distance from the visitor center; “Huangguoshu” in a listing can describe a broad area.
Rain, footwear and crowd decisions
Water volume changes by season and recent rainfall. Heavy rain can affect paths and transport, while dry periods change the visual experience. Wear shoes with wet-surface grip, keep electronics protected and follow closures. Tianxingqiao involves longer walking and should be the first sector removed when time, knees or the final shuttle become concerns.
Continue through Guizhou
Return to Guiyang for the widest rail choices, or continue only with a confirmed connection toward Libo or southeast Guizhou. Huangguoshu and Libo are each substantial scenic days; placing both around a late-night transfer creates a fragile itinerary.
