Keqiutou Archaeological Site Museum
Keqiutou Archaeological Site Museum (壳丘头遗址博物馆) connects Pingtan’s prehistoric settlements with the seafaring cultures of the Pacific. It gives the island’s coastal scenery a human history, making it a useful choice if you enjoy archaeology and museum interpretation.
Check access before traveling
Access checked September 9, 2026: the operator announced a weather-related closure from September 4. A subsequent China Pingtan announcement reports partial gallery reopening. Confirm which galleries are available and the day's admission arrangements with the museum on 0591-38088908 before making the journey. Partial reopening does not mean every exhibition is accessible.
How to approach the exhibitions
The museum opened in December 2024 with three exhibition themes, described in the Fujian culture department's opening report: Pingtan prehistory, Austronesian navigation and culture, and Pacific art from the Bowers Museum collection. Temporary displays and access can change; use the following as a way to choose what to see among the galleries open that day.
- Start with Pingtan prehistory. Look at how archaeological evidence explains life on the island. Connecting tools and settlement displays to everyday needs makes this section easier to follow than trying to memorize every date.
- Continue with seafaring and cultural connections. Use the navigation theme to connect the local story with movement between islands. This is the natural next subject once you have understood the Pingtan background.
- Finish with the art exhibition if available. Treat it as a distinct cultural collection, rather than assuming every object was excavated at Keqiutou. Check the current exhibition title before deciding how much time to leave for it.
Plan the visit around what is open
If only part of the museum is available, choose the exhibition that most interests you and keep the rest of the day flexible. Ask about English interpretation before choosing a guided visit; do not assume every label or multimedia display has an English version. Museum admission also should not be taken as permission to enter excavation areas.
Fit it into the trip
Consult the Pingtan guide for your island route. Confirm museum access first, then decide whether a stop on the northern coast fits your transport. During severe weather, verify both separately; an indoor museum is not automatically an available alternative to a closed coastal attraction.
