Shanghai skyline from a public bridge on a short city route

Shanghai Layover Guide

Pudong (PVG) is the main long-haul airport and sits far east of central Shanghai. Hongqiao (SHA) is closer to the city and integrated with the Hongqiao rail hub. A same-airport 10-hour PVG layover can support a structured outing; a PVG–SHA transfer is a connection day, not a city tour.

May You Clear Immigration?

Use a valid visa, ordinary visa-free entry or the 240-hour transit rule when eligible. For a 24-hour direct transit, leaving the restricted area requires temporary entry permission. Carry the confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and the accommodation or route details.

Free Shanghai Express Tours at PVG

Shanghai's official international-service material currently promotes Shanghai Express, a free layover-tour service for international travelers with a layover of at least eight hours. Published routes include a daytime city walk and an evening Huangpu River route, with transport, an English-speaking guide and visitor support.

Schedules, quotas, route content and immigration eligibility can change. Use the official Shanghai visitor guide and confirm the desk, meeting time and airport return after landing. “Free” does not remove passport, entry or onward-flight conditions.

PVG: Build Around the Transfer

The public options are Metro Line 2, the Maglev with a Line 2 connection, airport buses and legal taxis. Check the official Pudong transport page for live hours.

LayoverBest use
Under 7 hoursStay at the airport
8–12 hoursOfficial tour, or Bund + one adjacent district
12–18 hoursBund, People's Square or Yu Garden area, one meal and return
OvernightCentral hotel, one evening route and one morning cluster

For an independent short outing, choose the Bund and one neighbor: East Nanjing Road, People's Square, North Bund or Yu Garden area. Do not add both sides of the river merely to collect skyline photos. The ferry, metro exits and long waterfront can erode the return buffer.

A proven 4–5 hour PVG loop

Two real layovers.

  • A family with a seven-hour connection: they landed at 05:00, caught the first Maglev at 07:00 and had a relaxed 4.5 hours in the city.
  • A solo traveler with a 7 h 50 min gap: they lost an hour getting out of the airport and kept three hours for the return, leaving about four hours in the city.

A route that doesn't backtrack:

TimeStage
07:00Maglev to Longyang Road: about 8 minutes, every 20 minutes or so
Metro Line 2 to Lujiazui. Take exit 2 to the elevated walkway for the skyline view.
07:30Breakfast at a shengjian bun restaurant in the basement of the Jin Mao Tower; about ¥80 fed four people
Walk ten minutes to Dongchang Road ferry pier. The ¥2 ferry crosses the Huangpu in about 10 minutes to Jinling East Road.
Walk the Bund, then East Nanjing Road
About 11:00Line 2 back to the airport, or change at Longyang Road for the Maglev

Luggage storage at PVG.

  • Arrival floor: the left-luggage desks on level 3 charge about ¥15 for a cabin bag up to four hours and ¥20 for four to ten hours. Larger cases cost more.
  • Closing time: the counters close at midnight, so don't use them if you return later.
  • Line 2 lockers: there are lockers inside the airport station, at about ¥5 an hour with a ¥30 cap.

Getting back. Plan to be back at the airport about three hours before departure. Walking distances, check-in and security at PVG are long.

SHA: Hongqiao Is Better for a Short City Visit

Metro Lines 2 and 10 connect Hongqiao with central districts. The official Hongqiao transport page controls current service. A 7–10-hour same-airport connection can support one French Concession walk or one museum/People's Square cluster if baggage and immigration are simple.

Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station share a large transport complex but not one boarding gate. Follow the exact terminal or station signs and allow walking, security and identity checks.

A 24-Hour Shanghai Plan

  1. Transfer to a hotel near People's Square, East Nanjing Road or a Line 2 station.
  2. Walk the Bund at blue hour; use a public viewpoint from the free skyline guide.
  3. Eat near the hotel rather than crossing the city late.
  4. Next morning, choose one: former French Concession streets, Shanghai Museum branch shown on the live booking, or Yu Garden area.
  5. Return directly to the airport with a second route saved.

Airport Change: PVG to SHA

Treat a PVG–SHA itinerary as a self-transfer unless the airline confirms baggage and protection. You may need to clear immigration, collect bags, travel roughly across Shanghai, check in again and clear security. Rail service hours, traffic and terminal assignments all matter.

Do not plan the Bund between airports. If the ticket is not protected and the first flight is late, the onward airline may not rebook you. A legal taxi or booked vehicle can reduce transfers but cannot guarantee the road. Compare an exact Trip.com Pudong transfer or Hongqiao transfer after entering both flight numbers and terminals.

Tickets, Bags and Fallbacks

Timed museums and attractions should use the passport carried on the trip. An eight-hour layover is not the place to gamble on a sold-out ticket or an unofficial “guaranteed” reservation.

Confirm whether bags are checked through. Airport storage, city-station lockers and hotel luggage rooms have different rules; never leave passport, medication or onward documents inside the stored bag. When the city outing fails, use airport dining, a lounge or sleep pod rather than shrinking the boarding margin.

Leave the City Earlier Than Feels Necessary

Shanghai stations and terminals can involve long internal walks. Return based on the airline's deadline plus travel and disruption margin, not on the advertised train time. Recheck the departure terminal, especially after schedule changes.

A good layover gives you one coherent piece of Shanghai and preserves the onward flight. Save the full Shanghai destination guide for a later stay.
