Guizhou in 9 days: one eastern village corridor, Libo and Huangguoshu
Use Guiyang → Zhaoxing → Xijiang → Libo → Anshun/Huangguoshu. This route is possible without self-driving, but not by pretending every transfer is a single train. It combines high-speed rail with pre-confirmed local buses, scenic shuttles or a driver for the weak links.
Open the complete 9-day structured itinerary.
Why nine days is the minimum
Recent public-transport route reports make the same operational points: Huangguoshu is a large shuttle-linked system, Xiaoqikong rewards a deliberate gate direction, and village-to-village connections can consume half a day. A seven-day plan can keep Guiyang, one village base, Libo and Huangguoshu. It cannot give equal time to Zhaoxing and Xijiang without rushing.
The base plan
| Base | Nights | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Guiyang | 2 | arrival, regional context and reliable rail gateway |
| Zhaoxing | 2 | Dong village and one surrounding walk |
| Xijiang | 1 | hillside settlement after day-trip crowds |
| Libo | 2 | Xiaoqikong full day and transfer margin |
| Anshun | 1 | early Huangguoshu start |
Zhaoxing or Xijiang if you keep only one
Choose Zhaoxing for a slower village base and easier Congjiang high-speed-rail approach. Choose Xijiang for a larger, more theatrical hillside settlement with extensive visitor infrastructure. Neither is an untouched community. Be honest about staged programming, commercial streets and residents' privacy; do not turn ordinary homes or people into props.
Two scenic days that cannot be compressed
Xiaoqikong uses gates, scenic buses and long walking segments. Many visitors find a west-to-east flow more efficient, but current entrance allocation and maintenance control. Huangguoshu combines multiple zones connected by transfers. Pick the branches that matter and preserve the final ride out.
How the transfers actually work
A fast public-transport version. One traveler did Xijiang, Xiaoqikong and Huangguoshu in three days:
| Day | Route |
|---|---|
| 1 | High-speed rail from Guiyang North to Kaili South, about 35 minutes. A direct shuttle or shared car to Xijiang's west or north gate costs ¥30–50 and takes about half an hour. Xijiang needs an afternoon and evening. |
| 2 | A direct tourist shuttle from Xijiang to Xiaoqikong east gate, booked on Trip.com at about ¥130. The 08:00 departure arrives around 11:10. Leave bags at the east-gate visitor center, then take the evening train from Libo to Guiyang North and on to Anshun West. |
| 3 | A scenic shuttle (about ¥22) or shared car (about ¥30) takes 40 minutes to Huangguoshu. About six hours covers Doupotang, Tianxingqiao and the main falls; then back to Anshun West for the train. |
The nine-day plan above keeps the same links but adds the nights that make them enjoyable.
Xiaoqikong direction. The park road is about 20 km, and the best walking section is downhill from west to east: Shishang Forest to the Xiaoqikong bridge, about 1.5 km. Most visitors arrive at the east gate, which is cheaper by taxi, and ride inside to the west.
- Which shuttle: take the in-park shuttle from inside the gate, not the car outside offering rides to the west gate.
- Changing at the west gate: cross the road to the bus toward Wolong Pool rather than walking to the gate.
- How long it takes: with buses, allow about five hours and roughly 15,000 steps.
Huangguoshu to Xiaoqikong buses. Two competing operators run this route: one from the Huangguoshu bus station and one booked online that leaves from a hotel car park near the scenic area. Their pickup points differ, so check which one your ticket names. The trip takes about 4.5 hours, costs from ¥90 and departs around 10:00 and 16:40.
Booking strategy
Book the long trains first, then confirm Congjiang–Zhaoxing, Zhaoxing–Xijiang and Xijiang–Libo as actual services or a named driver—not as map assumptions. Compare live rail inventory on Trip.com. If hiring a driver, use the private-guide and tour checklist to require legal vehicle details, inclusions and cancellation terms.
Rain and mobility
Guizhou's wet stone, stairs and scenic buses make this an active route. Carry real grip, keep luggage small and expect a slower pace in rain. Travelers with limited mobility should choose one village, stay near the accessible entrance and ask each scenic operator about current lift, shuttle and step-free conditions.
Final decision
Choose the full route for cultural landscapes plus karst nature. Choose Guiyang–Libo–Huangguoshu for fewer hotel changes. The best Guizhou trip is not the one with the most village names; it is the one whose transfer days still leave complete scenic days.
