Greater Bay Area in 10 days: five cities, three immigration systems
Use Hong Kong → Macau → Zhuhai → Guangzhou → Shenzhen when arriving in Hong Kong and departing from Shenzhen or Hong Kong. Reverse it when flights dictate. The order reduces backtracking, but it does not make the border crossings ordinary metro rides.

Public itinerary reports often fit the five names into six days and then record more than 20,000 steps daily, repeated packing and no room for border queues. Ten days is not indulgent: it is the duration that lets each city have a distinct job.
Border logic before hotel booking
Hong Kong and Macau have separate immigration controls from mainland China. Check whether your passport needs permission for each jurisdiction and whether a mainland visa or visa exemption covers both mainland entries. A route that enters Zhuhai and later returns to Hong Kong may require different entry capacity from a one-way open-jaw trip.

Crossing by the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge
Hong Kong to Macau without the ferry
Cross-boundary coaches leave from China Hong Kong City in Tsim Sha Tsui and go straight to hotels in Macau, such as The Venetian in Cotai or Lisboa. In 2025 they ran about every 30 minutes, and a one-way adult ticket was about HK$160.
You change buses twice, at the Hong Kong and Macau artificial-island ports. Clear immigration at each with all your luggage, then follow the uniformed company staff to the next bus of the same color.
Zhuhai to Hong Kong
From the bridge's Zhuhai port:
- Buy a "gold bus" shuttle ticket (about ¥58 one way by day, more at night).
- Ride about 40 minutes across the bridge.
- Clear Hong Kong immigration.
- Take an airport bus line into the city, such as A11 to Central or A21 to Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui, for about HK$40–50.
At night (22:00–08:00) the Zhuhai departure hall changes, so follow the night-crossing signs.
Choosing a Zhuhai–Macau checkpoint

Free casino-hotel shuttle buses ("fortune buses") run from several checkpoints into Macau.
Why Zhuhai belongs in the route
Zhuhai is not merely a border bed. One deliberate coast day creates a pause between Macau's dense walking and Guangzhou's metropolis. If time is tight, cross directly from Macau to Guangzhou and remove Zhuhai entirely rather than arriving after dark and leaving at dawn.
Guangzhou and Shenzhen are not interchangeable
Choose Guangzhou for Lingnan history, older commercial streets, dim sum and museums. Choose Shenzhen for recent urbanism, design, technology districts, parks and access to Hong Kong. The existing Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong route guide explains the mainland rail corridor in more detail.
Book transport in this order
Confirm immigration eligibility, then the Hong Kong–Macau crossing, the Macau–Zhuhai checkpoint plan, and mainland trains. Compare mainland and cross-boundary rail inventory on Trip.com, but verify the exact station: Guangzhou South, Guangzhou East, Shenzhen North, Futian and West Kowloon are not interchangeable.
Final decision
Choose ten days for the complete five-city arc. With seven days, keep Hong Kong, Macau and either Guangzhou or Shenzhen. The route becomes enjoyable when crossing days are allowed to be partial days and every city is not forced to prove itself in one evening.
