Beijing Central Axis seen from Jingshan during a layover route

Beijing Layover Guide

Eight hours is enough only for one controlled outing from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) when immigration, baggage and onward check-in align. Twenty-four hours supports one city cluster and sleep. Seventy-two hours supports central Beijing plus one Great Wall day. Daxing Airport (PKX) needs a different time budget because it is south of the city.

First Decide Whether You May Leave the Airport

  • Use ordinary visa-free entry, a valid visa or the 240-hour transit policy when eligible.
  • A 24-hour direct-transit passenger who wants to leave the restricted area must obtain temporary entry permission; approval is not automatic.
  • Keep the onward ticket to a third country or region, passport, hotel address and full route ready.
  • If the connection stays airside and baggage is checked through, do not clear immigration just to collect a city photo.

Your Usable Time Is Smaller Than the Layover

Deduct immigration and baggage, airport-to-city travel in both directions, security and the airline's check-in or boarding deadline. A nominal eight-hour connection may leave fewer than three hours outside the airport.

ConnectionSensible plan
Under 6 hoursStay airside or in the terminal; do not attempt the city
6–10 hours at PEKOfficial tour if confirmed, or one close and tightly timed stop
8–12 hours at PKXOne south/central cluster only if entry is smooth
18–30 hoursCentral Axis or Temple of Heaven–Qianmen plus a hotel
48–72 hoursTwo city days or one city day plus one Great Wall day

PEK: Capital Airport

The Capital Airport Express connects the airport with Beixinqiao, Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao. It is usually the most predictable city transfer. The official PEK transport page should be rechecked for current hours and terminal stops.

The official Beijing Express layover tour

Beijing's official international-service site currently lists Beijing Express routes for international transit passengers, including a Great Wall option and a Central Axis highlights option. The published joining point is the Ctrip counter in Terminal 3 at Beijing Capital Airport. The service can include transport, a foreign-language guide, attraction admission and internet access.

Treat it as capacity-controlled, not guaranteed. Check the official layover-tour page for the live schedule and eligibility after landing. Confirm return time, included ticket, baggage handling and whether the route fits the next flight before joining.

An independent 8-hour PEK route

Choose one: Lama Temple/Guozijian, Beixinqiao food streets, or a short Qianmen–Tian'anmen-edge walk. Do not combine the Forbidden City with an eight-hour connection: its timed ticket, security geography and northbound one-way exit can consume the entire margin.

One version that works in about six hours on the ground.

  1. Take a taxi to the Lama Temple (雍和宫). Book the entry slot in advance and allow about 1.5 hours.
  2. Walk the hutongs next door: Wudaoying, Jianchang and Guozijian Street. Have coffee or a roast duck lunch.
  3. Take a taxi back. Without traffic it takes under 40 minutes.

Return to PEK before the minimum airline deadline, not when the Airport Express journey begins. Use a taxi only from an official queue and retain a second transfer plan.

PKX: Daxing Airport

The Daxing Airport Express reaches Caoqiao, where a city transfer is still required. The official PKX transport page lists current rail, bus and taxi options.

For a short layover, favor Temple of Heaven or the Qianmen area over the far north of Beijing.

An evening loop of about five hours from Daxing. This suits travelers whose airline checks bags through:

  1. Ride to Qianmen. Use the Daxing Airport Express and the metro. A cheaper option is the intercity train from Daxing Airport station to Beijing West, though it does not run between about 17:00 and 21:00.
  2. Exit I faces Zhengyang Gate. Walk through Beijing Fun and the old shopfronts of Dashilan.
  3. From the Dashilan stop, take bus 5. It runs up the central axis past the National Museum, Tiananmen, the Forbidden City, Jingshan, Wanning Bridge and the Drum Tower to Deshengmen in about half an hour.
  4. Walk to Jishuitan metro station and head back to the airport.

This loop shows Tiananmen and the axis from the street without a square reservation.

Ordering food airside at PKX. Daxing Airport's 兴先送 mini-program lets you order from airport restaurants. Pick up takeaway in about 15 minutes or have it delivered to your gate in about 30. Daxing to Mutianyu or Badaling is not a responsible short-connection plan. The airport and PEK are also not interchangeable: a self-transfer between them crosses the city and needs a very large buffer.

A Strong 24-Hour Plan

  1. Arrival afternoon: transfer to a Qianmen, Dongcheng or Wangfujing hotel; leave luggage.
  2. Late afternoon: Temple of Heaven or a hutong cluster, chosen by opening time.
  3. Evening: Qianmen–Dashilar meal and early sleep.
  4. Next morning: one pre-booked Central Axis site, then airport.

If your booking includes the Forbidden City, enter from Meridian Gate and exit north or east as the official flow requires. Never book it for the same morning as a tightly timed international departure.

A Realistic 72-Hour Plan

  • Day 1: arrival, Qianmen and a compact Central Axis walk.
  • Day 2: one Great Wall section with a booked vehicle or verified public route.
  • Day 3: Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven or one museum—then return to the departure side of the city.

Read the Beijing Central Axis route and Great Wall section chooser before selecting stops. A Great Wall day needs weather and traffic slack.

Bags, Sleep and Tickets

Confirm whether baggage is checked through before immigration. If it is not, storage location and opening hours become part of the route. For an overnight connection, a real hotel usually protects the next flight better than an all-night sightseeing plan; compare Beijing hotels on Trip.com.

Reserve timed attractions under the same passport used at entry. For paid or guided options, compare the exact Trip.com Forbidden City product only after reading the official ticket conditions. A tour cannot lawfully promise a closed venue or bypass identity checks.

Abort the City Plan When

  • immigration or baggage takes longer than planned;
  • the free tour desk cannot confirm a seat and return time;
  • severe weather affects rail, roads or the Great Wall;
  • the onward flight changes terminal or check-in requirement;
  • your passport is not admitted for temporary entry.

The successful layover is the one that boards the onward flight calmly. Beijing will still be here for a longer trip.
