Pudacuo: Shangri-La's best structured forest-and-lake day
Pudacuo is Shangri-La's strongest structured nature day, combining highland forest, meadow, clear water and signed lakeside walking around Shudu Lake. The official visitor centre and internal vehicle make the large protected landscape approachable; start with the Shudu core, then add the open forest or Bita branch shown on the current route map.
Current operating baseline
Checked on August 20, 2026, the official Pudacuo site lists:
- CNY 68 admission plus CNY 70 for the sightseeing vehicle;
- baseline opening hours of 08:00–16:30, with seasonal and holiday changes;
- Shudu Lake and only part of the Bita Lake area available;
- four listed coaches from Shangri-La Passenger Station, with four stated returns.
Treat all four as same-day verification items. The operator can change hours, transport or open zones for weather, conservation, events and holiday crowd control. A timetable on the website is not a guarantee that a foreign passport will work in every online checkout; use the official ticket window or call the operator if the document field fails.
Choose the right version
- Short version: visitor centre, current first-trail choice, Shudu Lake core and return. Best when altitude, rain or a fixed coach limits the day.
- Fuller version: add only the branch the official map marks open that morning. Do not plan around historic Bita Lake routes.
The park's own description places Shudu Lake at about 3,595 metres. A comfortable city walk is not proof that a longer boardwalk at this elevation will feel easy.

Follow this scenic sequence
- At the visitor centre, photograph the current route map and final vehicle times.
- Confirm whether the first forest walk is open and where it rejoins the sightseeing vehicle.
- Protect enough time for the Shudu Lake segment.
- Add a Bita branch only if staff and signs confirm its exact open section and return connection.
- Cut the final branch before rushing the core walk or risking the last transfer.
Visitor reports describe a route built from a first forest segment, Shudu Lake and an optional or partial Bita component. That pattern is useful for decisions, but only the current official map controls movement.

Transport from Shangri-La
Amap places the visitor centre about 25 km by road from Dukezong, roughly 31 minutes without live traffic. It returned no normal public-transit route. The operator site lists passenger-station coaches, but departure and return inventory must be confirmed before relying on them. A private or shared vehicle is useful only with a written pickup, waiting and cancellation agreement.
Do not book a return so tight that one internal queue strands you. Save the driver/coach contact and show the exact visitor-centre pin, not only the national-park name.
Conservation and safety
The Diqing regulation governs protected Pudacuo resources. Stay on open signed routes, never feed animals, do not enter wetlands or forests beyond barriers and do not follow unofficial shortcuts. A close animal encounter produced by food is harmful, not a travel benefit.

Pudacuo or Napa Lake?
Choose Pudacuo when you want a structured, regulated landscape day and accept the combined admission-and-vehicle cost. Choose Napa Lake for a flexible half day. Do not add Balagezong on the same day: it is a separate long road-and-canyon product.
