Yangshuo: choose the base before the day trip

Itineraries including Yangshuo

Yangshuo (阳朔) is the part of the Guilin journey where the karst landscape becomes a place to stay rather than a view from a vehicle. Wake beside fields and limestone peaks, arrive by the Li River, give Xingping's river bends their own light, or use the county town for an easy dinner and the next transfer.

The useful first decision is geographic: Yangshuo town and the edge of West Street, the Yulong River countryside, and Xingping are three different bases. Choose the one that supports tomorrow morning rather than treating “Yangshuo” as one compact hotel zone.

Choose among three Yangshuo bases

BaseBest forWhat it makes easierTrade-off to solve before booking
County town / West Street edgeA first visit, a short stay, restaurants and flexible road pickupsA simple post-cruise evening and access to several different day productsThe commercial core can be lively and noisy; check the exact room position and vehicle access
Yulong River countrysideQuiet mornings, fields, a booked bamboo-raft day and a slower countryside rhythmAn early start near the landscape and an easy pairing with one part of the Ten-Mile Gallery corridorThe resort area is dispersed; confirm the property pin, meals and transfer to the exact booked wharf
Xingping / railway sideAn early or late train, a land-focused Li River day and sunrise or sunset lightStaying near Yangshuo Railway Station and avoiding an unnecessary return to the county townStation, old town and riverbank are separate nodes; confirm luggage collection and the actual pickup point

Compare Yangshuo stays on Trip.com, then check the exact property pin, room conditions, cancellation terms, arrival window and international-guest policy. A broad zone label does not guarantee quiet, a river view or a transfer.

Two compact days or three slower days

Two days: protect one landscape day

  • Arriving by Li River cruise: use Day 1 for the one-way Guilin–Yangshuo journey and a flexible town evening; use Day 2 for either the Yulong countryside or a deliberate Xingping day.
  • Arriving by train: use the Xingping side while you are already there, then transfer to the town or countryside base; reserve the second day for the Yulong landscape.
  • Choose one main product each day. A raft, rural road corridor and Xingping riverbank are stronger when they are not compressed into a transfer checklist.

Three days: let each base do one job

Use one day for the Li River arrival or Xingping, one for the Yulong River and selected countryside movement, and one for a slower town morning, weather recovery or the experience you deliberately left out. The extra day earns its value by reducing vehicle changes, not by adding every cave and viewpoint.

Arrive by river: make the cruise the first hotel move

The classic full Li River guide starts in Guilin and ends in Yangshuo. Treat it as a one-way sightseeing transfer, not a local half-day ride: sleep in Guilin beforehand, keep passport and essentials in a day bag, and reserve the Yangshuo night around the selected landing and onward transfer.

The hub's bookable option is an exact four-star one-way Guilin–Yangshuo cruise on Trip.com. The selected-date package—not the headline—controls the Guilin pickup area, lunch, assigned wharf, Yangshuo landing, baggage handling, hotel transfer, passport flow and cancellation terms. A short Xingping cruise or electric sightseeing craft is a different product and belongs in the full Li River chooser.

County town: use West Street as evening infrastructure

The county town is the most adaptable base for a short trip. West Street (西街) supplies dinner, shops and an easy evening walk, while a room on the edge can preserve access without making the bar-and-commercial core the whole Yangshuo experience.

Use the town for a post-cruise reset, food and confirmed road pickups. Ask where a vehicle can actually stop, especially inside pedestrian lanes, and check whether the room faces nightlife or an internal courtyard. The mountains and countryside remain the reason to stay; West Street is the convenient evening layer.

Yulong River side: wake inside the countryside

Choose the Yulong River (遇龙河) side when fields, village edges and an early river or cycling day matter more than restaurant choice. The landscape continues beyond one attraction gate, and the named raft wharf and endpoint determine the day's road plan.

Use the Yulong River bamboo-rafting guide to choose the named product, then use the Ten-Mile Gallery guide for one compatible countryside segment. Confirm the exact Chinese wharf before arranging a car, bicycle or property transfer; a hotel using “Yulong River” in its name may still be far from the booked start or endpoint.

Xingping: pair the river landscape with the railway side

Xingping (兴坪) works best as a separate Li River land base, not merely a currency-note photo stop. Give the riverbank, old-town lanes and changing light enough time to feel distinct from the county town, then keep the water product optional.

This base is especially useful for an early or late Yangshuo Station train. Stay by the station for the simplest luggage move, or nearer Xingping Ancient Town for a river-focused stay; confirm any property collection between them. Water level, mist, cattle and sunset color vary with the day, so plan for the landscape rather than one guaranteed photograph.

Arrive by train or road with the correct node

Yangshuo Railway Station (阳朔站) is on the Xingping side, not in Yangshuo town. AMap models checked on 21 August 2026 placed it about 7.8 km / 20 minutes by car from Xingping Ancient Town, but about 33.2 km / 1 hour 30 minutes by car from West Street. These are planning estimates, not a live shuttle timetable.

Search live inventory with Trip.com trains, select the exact station printed on the itinerary, and arrange the onward transfer separately. For road arrivals, Yangshuo Coach Station, Fengming Distribution Centre and West Street are also distinct nodes; preserve the Chinese destination name when confirming a pickup.

Let weather and water shape the day

Rain and cloud can give the karst layers depth, while heavy rain, high or low water, wind and visibility controls can change or suspend cruises and rafting. Check the Li River and Yulong River operators on the visit day before leaving for a wharf, and keep one land-based or town half-day flexible.

For any booked water product, carry the original passport and confirm the selected-date document flow once with the official or product channel. Follow life-jacket and crew instructions, use shoes with wet-surface grip, and choose a car over a bicycle or e-bike when rain, heat, darkness or traffic exceeds your confidence.

Book in the order the geography requires

  1. Choose the arrival: one-way Li River cruise, train through the Xingping-side station or road.
  2. Choose the base that makes the next morning easiest: town, Yulong countryside or Xingping.
  3. If rafting, book the exact named wharf product and confirm the endpoint and return transfer.
  4. Add one compatible countryside or Xingping block, then leave weather margin before a flight or long train.

Yangshuo rewards a simple plan: one useful base, one landscape product per day and enough time for the karst scenery to become the trip rather than its backdrop.

Make the five decisions

Plan Yangshuo without adding random stops

Choose the trip shape first, then use live booking and transport information for your exact date.

How Many Days?
  • Two full days: the useful minimum for one Yulong countryside day plus either a Li River arrival, a Xingping day or a county-town evening.
  • Three full days: separates the Li River or Xingping, the Yulong countryside and a slower town or weather-recovery day without repeated base changes.
  • A Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise is a one-way hotel move. Count it as the arrival day rather than adding it as a local half-day attraction.
  • Cut-first rule: remove an extra cave or viewpoint before compressing rafting, the countryside corridor and Xingping into one transfer-heavy day.
Choose Your Route
  • Choose arrival first: one-way Li River cruise from Guilin, rail through the Xingping-side Yangshuo Station, or road arrival in the county town.
  • Choose the next-morning base: county town / West Street edge for flexible pickups and evening food; Yulong countryside for a slower landscape stay; Xingping for rail access and a Li River land day.
  • Compact first visit: Li River arrival or Xingping → one named-wharf Yulong product → one compatible Ten-Mile Gallery segment or a flexible town half-day.
  • Use the existing Li River, Yulong River and Ten-Mile Gallery guides for product detail. They remain Guilin-region canonicals and are not duplicate Yangshuo attractions.
Book These First
  • Full Li River cruise: selected date, Guilin pickup or boarding wharf, vessel, lunch, Yangshuo landing, baggage and hotel-transfer inclusion.
  • Yulong River: exact Chinese wharf, route direction, endpoint, raft capacity and the return transfer; do not book from the area name alone.
  • Yangshuo stay: exact property pin, town / countryside / Xingping fit, vehicle access, international-guest policy and any promised wharf or station transfer.
  • Rail: select Yangshuo Station only when its Xingping-side location fits the plan, then confirm the onward transfer separately.
  • Water day: recheck weather, water level, operating notice and original-passport flow for the selected product before leaving for the wharf.
Prepare entry, payments and transport
Explore by Area
  • County town and West Street edge for arrival, food and evening convenience; the dispersed Yulong River and Ten-Mile Gallery countryside for named-wharf and selected-corridor days; Xingping and Yangshuo Railway Station as a separate Li River / rail-side base.
Where to Go Next

Guilin city is the natural upstream gateway before a one-way cruise. Longsheng / Longji is a separate terrace-and-village package, while Silver Cave remains a Lipu road excursion rather than a Yangshuo-owned attraction.
