China Tourist Visa (L Visa)

The L Visa is designed for foreigners who wish to travel to China for tourism purposes. It's the most common type of visa applied for by foreign visitors.

First check whether your passport and travel purpose qualify for a current visa-free entry policy. If they do, you may not need an L visa.

Key Features of Tourist Visa

• Duration of Stay: The allowed days per entry are printed on the issued visa
• Validity Period: Entry-validity dates and the number of entries are decided by the issuing authority and printed on the visa
• Restrictions: Visa holders cannot work or engage in activities unrelated to tourism
• Extensions: Case-by-case; apply at least seven days before the permitted stay expires

Required Documents

Basic Materials

1. Passport Requirements

   • Usually valid for at least 6 months, following your local mission's rule
   • Required blank pages vary by mission
   • Copy of passport information page
   • Previous Chinese visa copy (if applicable)

2. Visa Application

   • Follow the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Service Center responsible for your residence
   • Complete the online form on the platform it specifies; many missions use the China Online Visa Application system

3. Photo Requirements

   • Recent photo (taken within 6 months)
   • White background
   • Full frontal view meeting the current application's size and quality rules

4. Proof of Legal Residence

   • Required for third-country passport holders
   • Valid residence permit or visa

Supporting Documents

1. Travel Itinerary

   • Round-trip flight tickets
   • Hotel reservations
   • OR Invitation letter from a host in China including:
     • Invitee's information (name, gender, birth date, passport number)
     • Travel itinerary (arrival/departure dates, places to visit)
     • Host's information (name, contact number, address)
     • Copy of host's ID

2. Financial Proof

   • Bank statements, employment evidence, or other financial proof may be required by the office handling the application

Visa Application Process

1. Confirm that you need a visa and identify the responsible application office
2. Complete its online application and preliminary review
3. Submit your passport and supporting material as instructed; an appointment is not required in many locations
4. Provide fingerprints only if your application is not exempt
5. Pay the locally published fees and follow the local collection timetable

Through December 31, 2026, applicants for short-term visas with a stay of no more than 180 days are generally exempt from fingerprint collection.
