China Tourist Visa (L Visa)

The L Visa is designed for foreigners who wish to travel to China for tourism purposes. It's the most common type of visa applied for by foreign visitors.

Before applying, check whether your passport and purpose qualify for China's current unilateral or mutual visa-free entry rules. Those policies can remove the need for an L visa and are updated more often than the visa application checklist.

Key Features of Tourist Visa

  • Duration of Stay: The allowed days per entry are printed on the visa and vary by application and issuing authority
  • Validity Period: The final entry-validity dates and number of entries are printed on the issued visa
  • Restrictions: Visa holders cannot work or engage in activities unrelated to tourism
  • Extensions: Case-by-case only; apply to the local exit-entry administration at least seven days before the permitted stay expires

Basic Materials

  1. Passport Requirements

    • Usually valid for at least 6 months, following the rule of the mission where you apply
    • The number of required blank visa pages varies by mission

  2. Visa Application

    • Follow the Chinese embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Service Center responsible for your place of residence
    • Complete the online form on the platform specified by that office; many missions now use the China Online Visa Application system
    • Upload, print, or sign the confirmation material exactly as the local instructions require

  3. Photo Requirements

    • Recent photo (taken within 6 months)
    • White background
    • Full frontal view meeting the size and quality rules shown by the application system

  4. Proof of Legal Residence

    • Required for third-country passport holders
    • Valid residence permit or visa

  2. Financial Proof

    • Some missions request bank statements, employment evidence, or other proof of sufficient funds
    • Do not assume a fixed six-month statement period; follow your local checklist

Visa Application Process

  1. Confirm that you need a visa and identify the embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Service Center responsible for your residence
  2. Complete the online application and upload the required documents on that office's specified platform
  3. Wait for any online preliminary review, then submit your passport and any original material as instructed; many locations no longer require an appointment
  4. Provide fingerprints only if your application is not exempt
  5. Pay the locally published visa and service fees
  6. Collect or receive your passport according to the local processing timetable

As of 2026, applicants for short-term Chinese visas with a stay of no more than 180 days are exempt from fingerprint collection through December 31, 2026. Long-term categories that require a residence permit after entry remain subject to fingerprint rules, and an issuing authority may give case-specific instructions.
