What to Eat in Guangzhou
Guangzhou rewards repeat small meals: morning tea, roast meat or noodles at lunch, dessert in the afternoon and a shared Cantonese dinner. Freshness, timing and kitchen specialization matter more than chasing a single “best” branch.
Essential meal formats
- Morning tea and dim sum: use the dim sum guide to balance steamed, crisp and sweet items.
- Roast meats (烧味): roast goose, char siu and soy chicken over rice or as a shared plate.
- White-cut chicken: poached for clean texture, served with ginger-scallion dip.
- Congee: smooth rice porridge with fish, pork, offal or century egg; excellent breakfast or late meal.
- Wonton noodles: small springy noodles and shrimp/pork wontons in clear broth.
- Rice-noodle rolls: breakfast or snack, steamed to order with shrimp, beef, pork or egg.
- Double-skin milk and sweet soups: dairy custard or bean, sesame and herbal desserts.
- Soup and seasonal seafood: shared dinner formats where market price and weight require confirmation.
Choose a teahouse by the experience you want

| Beiyuan (北园酒家) | Yuexiu | Lingnan garden setting; good for a family table | About ¥100 |

Getting a table.
- Yindeng: small-table queues are long and numbers get skipped quickly. Agreeing to share a large table usually gets you in much faster.
- Neighborhood teahouses: most start serving between 07:00 and 08:00.
- Weekends: after 09:30 the popular names run 30–60 minute waits.
- Discounts: some community teahouses discount dim sum in the afternoon (one Haizhu teahouse offers half price after 14:00). Ask at the door.
Where to build the meals
Liwan, Xiguan and Enning Road
The strongest area for traditional snack formats, old residential texture, Cantonese dessert and an unhurried neighborhood meal. Do not treat one pedestrian lane as a complete food market; use side streets and current turnover.
Beijing Road and old central Guangzhou
Convenient for first-time sightseeing and broad restaurant choice. It is busy and commercial, so compare menus before joining the longest queue.
Yuexiu and Dongshankou
Useful for combining heritage streets with neighborhood cafés, noodles and full Cantonese meals. Choose the dish category first, then a nearby specialist.
Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town
Best for refined dining, malls, late hours and weather protection. It is operationally easy but should not be the only view of Guangzhou food culture.
Roast goose: order it at the right moment
Ask when the current batch came out and order a small portion first. Traditional skin softens as it cools; a famous name cannot guarantee every plate or branch is equally crisp. Balance fatty roast meat with greens, soup or rice rather than ordering several rich meats together.
Late-2025 roast goose price points from well-known shops give a useful baseline:
| Shop | Area | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Wan Nian (万年酒楼), 20–22 Yuexiu South Road | Yuexiu | About ¥80 for a portion |
| Yi Chu (壹厨), Dezheng Middle Road near Beijing Road | Yuexiu | About ¥38 |
| Lidi Mianjia (丽的面家), Duobao Road near Yongqingfang | Liwan | About ¥100 per person for a meal |
| Bingsheng Pinwei (炳胜品味), Tianhe East Road | Tianhe | About ¥148 for a portion |
| Fast roast goose over rice at counter shops | Various | ¥25–30 |
The lower half (下庄, xià zhuāng) is fattier and juicier; the upper half (上庄, shàng zhuāng) is leaner. Say which you want when you order a quarter or half goose.
Char siu can be lean, half-fat or fatty; point or ask. Plum sauce may accompany goose, but good meat should still taste of roasting and seasoning rather than only sauce.
A one-day food plan
- 07:30–10:00: morning tea with four or five dishes for two.
- Lunch: roast meat over rice or wonton noodles—keep it small.
- Afternoon: double-skin milk, herbal jelly or a sweet soup.
- Dinner: white-cut chicken, one seasonal vegetable, soup and one fish/seafood or tofu dish.
Ordering and price checks
Tea charge and service charge may be separate. Seafood can be priced by 斤 (500 g), 两 (50 g) or item; ask the total before cooking. A display tank proves the animal is present, not the price or cooking quality.
“Light” Cantonese food can still contain pork stock, dried seafood, oyster sauce or lard. Vegetarian, shellfish-allergic and halal travelers must verify each sauce and broth.
Final rule
Eat dim sum early, roast meats while fresh and seafood only after confirming weight and total. Guangzhou is a city of specialist meals, not one all-purpose food street.
