Shenzhen robots, EVs and AI: what visitors can actually experience

Shenzhen's technology is easiest to see in ordinary public life: a science museum built around digital civilisation, a commercial robot store where machines are demonstrated and sold, food arriving at a park pickup point by drone, and electric-car showrooms occupying normal shopping centres. These experiences are real, but they are spread across a long city and they do not add up to a single “future district.”

The strongest first plan is one full day at Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum in Guangming, then a separate Bantian robot half-day or Nanshan drone-and-EV half-day. Trying to connect all three districts in one day replaces the technology with long metro transfers.

This guide focuses on places a normal visitor could enter, reserve or buy from as of October 3, 2026. It excludes private corporate campuses, invitation-only factory tours, closed research laboratories, trade fairs outside their dated public sessions, and pilot services whose app or geofence does not work for you. For components, gadgets and buying technique, use the separate Huaqiangbei Electronics Market guide. For a national comparison of “future city” experiences, use the China futuristic cities route.

If you care most about engineering explanation, book the museum. If you want one memorable commercial demonstration with children, consider the Robot 6S Store. If you want to see how Shenzhen technology enters daily urban life, walk Talent Park, try the live drone-delivery flow and compare EV cabins nearby.

Option 1: give Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum a full day

Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum (深圳科学技术馆) is the only stop on this list that works as a complete destination. The public museum opened in Guangming in May 2025 and uses communication technology as a thread through digital civilisation, daily life, industry and frontier science. It is a better explanation of Shenzhen than a random collection of brand showrooms because it connects a device to infrastructure, production and research.

Use the verified AMap museum pin. The official address is 8 Guanghui Avenue, Guangming District. Metro Line 6 reaches Guangming Station; the official 2026 visitor Q&A says exits C/D connect through a Level-2 walkway. Do not navigate to the older Shenzhen Science Museum in Futian: it is a different institution and appears first in some searches.

What to prioritise inside

A traveller interested in this guide's theme should choose by question, not floor count.

  • Level 3, Better Life: start with mobility, low-altitude transport and the way AI moves into home and community systems. Visitor reports consistently mention driving or transport simulations here, but availability and queue rules can change.
  • Level 4, Smart Industry: make this the priority. The gallery connects robotics, digital twins, smart logistics, advanced manufacturing and industrial systems. It is the best place to distinguish a polished robot performance from the less visible sensing, control and production systems behind it.
  • Level 5, Exploring the Universe: add this for brain science, genetics, astronomy and space rather than because it is “more futuristic.” Its scientific scope is broader than Shenzhen industry.
  • Level 2, Hello World: use this to understand the communication thread and to orient yourself. The public space is useful even when a paid interactive slot is gone.

Recent repeat visitors reported that a small set of popular interactives used separate on-arrival reservations and that queues can close before the museum itself. That is an experience signal, not a permanent list. On arrival, read the day's official activity screen, reserve only the items that materially interest you, and build the floor order around those slots. Do not spend the first hour collecting every reservation if the exhibits themselves are the reason to visit.

Tickets and time

The museum's June 2026 official public Q&A lists Levels 1–2 as free public space and the permanent galleries on Levels 3–6 as ticketed. It gave a CNY 50 adult baseline, with concessions including CNY 32 for ages 60–65 and free admission for visitors over 65 who still reserve a place. It also directed visitors to the official Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum mini-program. Prices, age rules, passport handling, hours, temporary exhibitions and cinema tickets must be checked in the selected-date checkout.

The official calendar controls because weekday, weekend, school-holiday and special-event sessions have changed. Carry the original passport used to book. If the mini-program does not accept the document, contact the museum before travelling to Guangming; a social post saying “no reservation needed” may describe a different date, ticket type or document.

Budget five hours for a selective adult visit and a full opening day for a family that wants interactive galleries. Food choice inside has been a repeated visitor complaint. Check the current re-entry rule before assuming you can leave for lunch; carry water and a compact snack only where museum rules permit.

Do not attach Bantian casually

AMap's October 3 no-live-traffic model placed the museum and Robot 6S Store about 28.8 km / 40 minutes by car apart. The mapped metro journey was about 1 hour 18 minutes, with Line 6, Line 5 and Line 10 plus walking. That makes them possible in one long day only if the museum is deliberately reduced to a half-day. A first-time visitor normally gets more value by letting the museum fill the day.

Option 2: treat the Robot 6S Store as a commercial experience

The Robot 6S Store (机器人6S店) opened at Galaxy World in Bantian in July 2025. It is neither a conventional museum nor a private laboratory. The official model combines sales, parts, service, feedback, rental and customisation. The adjacent AI 6S Store adds product display, training, community and prototyping functions. Both are public-facing commercial experiments inside a working business complex.

Use the verified Robot 6S Store pin and the separate AI 6S Store pin. Both sit near Yabao Station on Metro Line 10. The map results place the entrances only a few hundred metres apart, but follow the current complex directory rather than an old exit letter.

The store is useful when you want to compare humanoid movement, quadruped robots, service machines and consumer AI products in one compact place. It also reveals the commercial questions that a stage video hides: Is this machine for sale or rental? Does it perform continuously or only during a scheduled demonstration? Which tasks are autonomous, remotely operated or prepared by staff? What maintenance, data and safety support does deployment require?

Illustrative reconstruction grounded in the Robot 6S Store's real commercial plaza and public demonstration scale. The robot, storefront display and performance shown are not a current schedule or product promise.

Why reviews conflict

Recent visitor reports are sharply divided. Some families enjoyed scheduled humanoid and robot-dog performances and spent one to two hours across the floors. Other visitors saw a compact sales hall, several paid interactions and unreliable demos, then felt that the admission price overpromised a museum. Both reactions can be accurate because the venue's value depends on the current demonstration roster and your expectation.

A May 2026 visitor reported a CNY 49 admission wristband, extra-price interactions and about 90 minutes of useful viewing. Later family posts promoted several daily performance times. Those are visitor reports, not a stable official tariff or timetable. Before leaving the hotel, ask the venue for today's admission, included floors, performance times, restaurant operation and whether the demonstrations you want are running. If staff cannot confirm the main demo, decide whether a commercial product floor alone is worth the journey.

The robot restaurant on Level 4 opened publicly on May 1, 2026, according to Longgang's official holiday report. It can be interesting to watch a cooking arm, drink station or service robot divide work with people. Do not mistake automation for an unmanned kitchen: preparation, loading, cleaning, serving and exception handling can remain human tasks. Read the menu and minimum-spend or entry conditions before ordering.

A practical two-hour route

  1. Start outside if a public demonstration is confirmed. Stand behind barriers and leave the machine's route clear.
  2. Walk the robot product floors with one task in mind: home service, cleaning, education, hospitality or industrial handling. Ask what is autonomous and what was preprogrammed.
  3. Compare the AI 6S Store only if you want developer devices, smart terminals or prototyping context. It is more business-facing than a children's attraction.
  4. Use the restaurant as an optional end, not proof that every task is automated.
  5. Stop after two hours unless a booked class or performance gives the extra time a purpose.

Photography permission can differ by product and event. Ask before filming staff, visitors, screens, prototypes or a machine's interface. Do not touch or step into a robot's operating zone simply because the machine appears idle.

Option 3: use Nanshan for everyday technology

Nanshan provides the most convincing technology half-day because it does not depend on a performance. At Shenzhen Talent Park (深圳人才公园), a consumer orders from currently supported merchants, chooses a live drone endpoint, and collects from the designated facility. Nearby shopping centres place several EV brands close enough to compare cabin software and physical packaging without attending a car show.

Drone delivery at Talent Park

Use the Talent Park AMap pin. Shenzhen's official park reporting confirms consumer drone delivery at Talent Park and several other parks, while a September 2026 district update describes a continuing expansion of Nanshan's network. That proves a live service ecosystem, not that every endpoint operates every hour.

Open the supported delivery app before ordering and let its current map determine the pickup point. A popular visitor route approached from Shenzhen Bay Culture Plaza, but the cabinet or landing point can move as the network changes. Do not navigate to a pin copied from a photograph. Check the merchant, endpoint, estimated handoff, weather status and refund path inside the live order.

A foreign visitor may encounter a mainland mobile-number, location, payment or identity requirement. Test the flow before paying and keep an ordinary meal alternative. Wind, rain, lightning, temporary airspace control, maintenance and merchant availability can suspend service. The useful experience is seeing an automated logistics chain work under real urban constraints; a cancelled flight is evidence of those constraints, not a reason to wait indefinitely.

Illustration of a delivery drone approaching an unbranded pickup cabinet in a Shenzhen park

Illustrative reconstruction of Shenzhen's documented park-delivery model. The cabinet, drone and exact lakeside placement are not wayfinding evidence; use the live delivery app and marked on-site area.

Stay outside the marked operating zone. Do not stand under the aircraft, reach toward it, launch your own drone nearby or move a parcel before the cabinet indicates collection. Talent Park remains a public landscape and exercise space; keep the path clear while watching.

Walk to a public EV showroom cluster

From the Talent Park main pin to Nanshan Coastal City, AMap modelled about 1.3 km / 17 minutes on foot without live closures. The current mall area contains a Tesla experience store, an ONVO store and an XPeng sales centre in the adjacent Poly Culture Plaza. The verified pins are Tesla Coastal City, ONVO Coastal City and XPeng Poly Culture Plaza.

The public value is comparison, not free entertainment. Ask staff before spending time in a car, and make space for genuine buyers. Compare the same five things in each model:

  1. rear-seat floor, headroom and luggage packaging;
  2. charging port and the charging information visible in the car;
  3. physical controls versus screen-only controls;
  4. driver-assistance display and the wording that limits it;
  5. privacy choices for cameras, voice, profiles and connected services.

Do not ask staff to demonstrate assisted-driving behaviour inside a mall. A test drive is a separate controlled activity. It can require advance booking, a driving licence accepted by the operator, local contact details, age eligibility and staff availability. A foreign licence plus translation or permit does not automatically satisfy a brand's insurance rules. Confirm first and accept a showroom-only visit if the answer is no.

Tenant mix changes. Tesla's official locator currently lists its Coastal City store, while the other two exact pins were current on AMap on October 3, 2026. Check the official brand locator or mall directory on the day. If one closes, the park-and-waterfront walk still works; do not cross Shenzhen for a single unconfirmed cabin.

Why BYD headquarters is not on the route

BYD is central to Shenzhen's EV story, but its Pingshan headquarters, technology museum, labs and production areas are corporate facilities. Official reports show invited journalists, students and organised groups entering on specific programmes. They do not establish public walk-in access.

BYD's official Di Space science-museum page currently lists public venues in Zhengzhou and Tianjin, not Shenzhen. A map label reading “BYD headquarters,” a social video of a delegation, or a tour agency's vague “factory visit” does not create a visitor ticket. Use a public BYD retail showroom if you want to inspect a current vehicle; request written confirmation if a legitimate organiser offers a named, dated group visit. Never arrive at a factory gate hoping security will improvise a tour.

The same rule applies to DJI offices, Tencent's campus, robotics factories and research institutes. A public flagship store can be entered during its current retail hours. The offices behind the brand remain workplaces unless the operator publishes a visitor programme for your date.

Trade fairs, robot races and autonomous pilots

Shenzhen hosts major auto, drone, electronics and robotics events. They can be excellent when the trip date matches, but each is an event, not an evergreen attraction. Verify the organiser, venue, public or trade-only status, registration document, ticket, age restriction and exact dates. Remove it from the plan when those facts are absent.

Robot performances outside the 6S Store, autonomous-vehicle pilots and eVTOL demonstrations are even more date-sensitive. A press event proves a demonstration happened. It does not prove repeat service, public booking or a route that accepts foreign registration. Treat a ride-hailing service as usable only when its current official app accepts your account, the pickup and destination fall inside the live geofence, a vehicle is available and the displayed terms are clear.

Do not enter a road, loading area or pilot lane for a photograph. “Driverless” can still involve a safety operator, remote assistance and controlled infrastructure. Describe what you observe rather than claiming full autonomy from an empty front seat.

One-day and two-day plans

Best single technology day: Guangming museum

Choose this when the group wants the deepest explanation, reliable indoor weather protection and enough content for adults and children. Book the dated permanent-gallery session, arrive near opening, prioritise Levels 4 and 3, add Level 5, and stop collecting interactives once the timetable becomes stressful.

Do not add Huaqiangbei afterward unless everyone still wants a long evening transfer and market browsing. The market answers a different question—how products and components are sold—not how AI, communication and manufacturing systems work.

Best mixed half-day: Talent Park plus EV cabins

Choose this when the main Shenzhen trip already stays in Nanshan. Test the drone-delivery app near late afternoon, keep a normal food backup, then walk to the Coastal City/Poly area for two or three showroom comparisons. Finish at Shenzhen Bay Park only if weather and daylight remain suitable.

Best robot-specific half-day: Bantian

Choose this only after the 6S Store confirms today's core demonstration or after deciding that the commercial product floor itself is enough. Pair it with food or another real errand near Galaxy World. Do not cross to Guangming and Nanshan on the same half-day.

Two-day specialist plan

Use Day 1 for Guangming Science and Technology Museum. Use Day 2 for Bantian's Robot and AI 6S stores, then choose either Huaqiangbei for hardware markets or Nanshan for drone delivery and EV showrooms. That last choice prevents a zigzag across the city.

AMap's no-live-traffic models show why: Robot 6S Store to Talent Park was about 22.6 km / 25 minutes by car or 1 hour 9 minutes by subway, while museum to Robot 6S was about 40 minutes by car or 1 hour 18 minutes by subway. Traffic, waits and station walking can increase those figures.

Practical setup for an international visitor

  • Install a map that can resolve Chinese POI names and save the Chinese names offline.
  • Set up a mainstream mobile payment method before relying on drone delivery, ticket mini-programs or a commercial interaction.
  • Carry the passport used for the museum ticket and keep its booking confirmation available offline.
  • Expect Chinese-first exhibit text, product interfaces and mini-programs. Camera translation can help with static labels; ask before photographing screens or prototypes.
  • Use your own account for face, voice or AI-personalisation demos. Read the consent screen; skip biometric or health-analysis features if the purpose, retention or deletion terms are unclear.
  • Keep indoor alternatives during thunderstorms and typhoon warnings. Drone service and outdoor robot demonstrations should be expected to stop.
  • Stay in Futian for the broadest transport balance, Nanshan for Talent Park and EV showrooms, or Longhua/Bantian only when the robot stop is central. Compare Shenzhen hotels on Trip.com by the nearest useful metro entrance rather than district name alone.

The honest technology route

Shenzhen is not a permanent expo. The museum gives the strongest curated explanation. The Robot 6S Store gives a changing commercial snapshot whose value depends on today's demonstrations. Talent Park turns logistics technology into a normal purchase, while EV showrooms let you compare the physical choices behind software-heavy cars.

Build the trip around those public interfaces. Treat headquarters, factories and labs as private unless a dated programme says otherwise; treat trade fairs and pilots as dated events; and let the live app or operator control every service that can change. That approach produces a more credible view of Shenzhen than collecting corporate lobbies and calling them attractions.
