Lijiang or Dali?

Choose Dali for a slower lake-and-village stay, cycling and a base that can absorb unplanned days. Choose Lijiang for a more intricate old town, Naxi/Dongba interpretation, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and onward travel to Tiger Leaping Gorge or Shangri-La.

Old-town reality

Both centers are commercial. Lijiang's branching lanes, water system and Dongba/Naxi context can reward a guided cultural reading, but nightlife and repeated shop formats dominate some streets. Dali Old Town has daily-life pockets, markets and access to villages, but its main roads can be noisy and congested with electric vehicles.

Recent visitor debates are sharply divided: some find Lijiang more coherent and better managed; others find it over-produced. Treat that disagreement as useful. Choose the cultural and landscape job, not an abstract “authenticity” winner.

Lake versus mountain

Dali's landscape depends on route and weather. The western ecological corridor suits cycling and short sections; east-lake viewpoints require more road travel. Do not promise an entire lake circuit as a relaxed day.

Lijiang's snow-mountain trip is more fixed: dated ticket/transport, altitude, weather and cableway operations control the day. Do not travel to high elevation immediately after a rushed arrival if the body is not adapting well.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: how the day really works

Lijiang's headline day is tightly controlled, and booking it is the main planning task.

Booking.

  • Where: tickets are sold only through the Lijiang Tourism Group mini-program in WeChat.
  • When they go on sale: Glacier Park (big) cableway tickets go on sale seven days ahead at 20:00; Spruce Meadow cableway tickets at 21:00. Peak dates sell out within minutes.
  • Purchase limits: the big cableway is limited to one purchase per account every 90 days. Cancelled and unpaid orders also count against the limit.

Prices in 2026.

ItemPrice
Admission¥100
Glacier Park cableway plus shuttle busAbout ¥140
Spruce Meadow (云杉坪) cableway plus busAbout ¥60

The ¥20 bus is refunded once if you buy both cableways. The Yak Meadow cableway was closed in 2026.

Time slots.

  • Check-in window: check in between the start of your slot and 30 minutes after it ends. A 09:00–09:29 slot means checking in by 09:59.
  • If you miss it: you are moved to 16:30, and the cableways stop checking tickets at 17:00.

Order of the day.

  1. Go up the big cableway first, in the morning. Afternoons bring cloud and wind, and the cableway can be throttled or stopped.
  2. From the upper station at 4,506 m, walk slowly to the 4,680 m marker. This takes up to an hour for unfit walkers.
  3. Spruce Meadow comes next.
  4. Finish at Blue Moon Valley. Its second lake, Yuye, is the prettiest, and you can leave from the Shuiyue Pavilion stop.

Altitude. One October 2026 visitor had a headache before even reaching the top and used two bottles of oxygen. Back in town they nearly went to hospital.

  • Allow a day in Lijiang before going up.
  • Carry one large oxygen canister per person.
  • Walk slowly, and don't plan a long shower or hard exercise on arrival.

Getting there and back.

  • Bus 101: runs from Zhongyi Market near the old town to the visitor center, about an hour for ¥15. The last bus back leaves around 18:00.
  • Shared cars: wait at the exits and charge about ¥20–25 a head.

Maintenance closures. In 2026 the big cableway closed for maintenance from 22 to 30 October, and Spruce Meadow from 31 October to 10 November. Check before you fix dates.

Dali: choose the shore before the room

Where you stay around Erhai Lake shapes the whole trip:

AreaGood forWatch out for
Outside the old town wallsFirst visits. Cheap, many restaurants and taxis, close to Cangshan.About 15 minutes' drive from the lake. Inside the walls, stone lanes are hard with luggage and nights are louder.
Longkan and Caicun pierSunrise over the lake at the start of the western ecological corridor; lively, with reasonably priced lake-view guesthousesNarrow village roads
Langqiao and the Panxi "S-bend"Stylish lake-view rooms with quiet nightsFew restaurants, many daytime visitors
XizhouRural Bai village life and snacksFar from everything; better on a repeat visit
ShuanglangTrue waterfront rooms on the east shoreFood in town is often pretty but poor value
Xiaguan (city center)Cheapest, most local, practical for the railway stationFew characterful hotels

One traveler who stayed in the new eastern districts spent 40–50 minutes in a taxi each way to the old town. The western shore holds most of the lake's best scenery.

On the western ecological corridor.

  • Renting a ride: you cannot ride an e-bike rented in the old town into the corridor. Rent inside the scenic access points instead, from about ¥15 an hour.
  • The best short stretch: if you have one day, it is roughly 10 km from Langqiao past the "most beautiful kilometer" to Xiajiyi. It is golden rice fields and reeds in autumn.
  • Sun: the sun is fierce at this altitude, so use sunscreen even on cloudy days.

Accommodation

In Dali, choose between Old Town, a western-shore village and the practical Xiaguan transport center. A lake-view room can sit far from food and vehicles. In Lijiang, stay near—rather than deep inside—the old town if carrying luggage; stone lanes and hill properties can make a beautiful pin impractical.

Combining them

The rail connection makes a two-base itinerary sensible. With six nights, use three in Dali and three in Lijiang. With four nights, choose one; a one-night stop in each reveals neither. The Yunnan route chooser helps add Kunming or Shangri-La without overloading the trip.

Final verdict

Pick Dali for slower days and lake-country breadth. Pick Lijiang for a sharper old-town and mountain chapter. Long-stay travelers usually gain more flexibility in Dali; short first-time visitors seeking iconic sights often gain more structure in Lijiang.
