Qiandongnan is a region, not one compact town. A journey here can pair Dong drum towers and rice-country paths around Zhaoxing, a large hillside Miao settlement at Xijiang, and the riverfront old town of Zhenyuan. Each has a different station, road approach and overnight rhythm. Choose two bases for a short trip; only a longer journey can give all three breathing room.
| Base | Go for | The planning cost |
|---|---|---|
| Zhaoxing Dong Village | Drum towers, lanes and a slower morning; optional Tang'an walk | Congjiang high-speed rail station is nearby but the last shuttle and village-side pickup still matter |
| Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village | A dramatic valley panorama and lively evening | Larger visitor flows, managed entrance/shuttle and uphill luggage logistics |
| Zhenyuan | Riverside architecture and a calmer two-night pause | A separate rail stop and different route; no reason to treat it as a quick add-on to both villages |
Zhaoxing and Xijiang are living communities with tourist businesses, not a single museum of “minority culture.” Pay for a local guide or craft demonstration when you want deeper context; do not treat residents, homes or ceremonies as photo props.
Two nights: arrive at Congjiang rail station, transfer to Zhaoxing, spend an evening and the next morning there; take a planned road transfer to Xijiang for a second night. Depart from the rail station that fits the end of the route. This is active travel, with one base change and a potentially long inter-village drive.
Three to four nights: give Zhaoxing two nights if Tang'an's hillside paths appeal, then Xijiang one night. Use the extra day for slow village time or a weather delay; do not force Zhenyuan into the same road day.
Five or more nights: add Zhenyuan as its own rail-connected stay. A river cruise, if running, is a separate weather-dependent product; the old town remains worthwhile as a walk.
Recent Zhaoxing travelers report that the hardest part of a Tang'an outing can be the return shuttle and the last leg from the village to Congjiang station. Confirm both before setting out. At Xijiang, the scenic operator sells admission and internal shuttle rights separately; check how many rides your selected ticket covers and where your hotel sits relative to the stops.
Day 1 — arrive at Congjiang, sleep in Zhaoxing. Congjiang high-speed rail station is the useful arrival for Zhaoxing; the rail station is not in the village itself. The reported station shuttle can be a short ride when operating, but confirm its current stop, last departure and luggage rules. On arrival, check in before wandering: some lanes have steps and vehicles cannot reach every guesthouse. Make a first circuit between the five drum towers and the covered bridges, noting how each neighborhood uses its tower as a gathering point. Eat in the village, then return through the quieter lanes after the largest groups have left. Ask before entering residential courtyards or photographing a ceremony.
Day 2 — Zhaoxing morning, Tang'an only if conditions fit. Start with a slow village breakfast and the lanes you missed at dusk. For a hillside contrast, go to Tang'an above Zhaoxing and walk its village paths and terrace viewpoints. The mapped road is only about 9 km, but its winding ascent takes roughly half an hour by car; the walking connection is around 7 km one way and is a hike, not a casual add-on in rain or heat. Choose either a confirmed shuttle/vehicle both ways or a one-way walk with a confirmed return. Terraces change through planting, green and harvest seasons. On return, leave the afternoon open for a craft demonstration or a second, more observant pass through Zhaoxing rather than another distant village.
Day 3 — transfer to Xijiang, overnight there. The road from Zhaoxing to Xijiang is about 185 km; map driving time is a little over two hours before mountain-road delay, stops and the scenic entrance process. A realistic door-to-door transfer occupies much of the morning. An alternative is rail via Congjiang → Kaili South, followed by the road to Xijiang; verify live train times and both station transfers before choosing it. From Kaili South, Xijiang is about 40 km by road. At Xijiang, identify the correct gate, internal shuttle stop and any luggage pickup before paying for a hillside room. Go first to the high viewpoint for the broad valley layout, then descend on foot through lanes and bridges; eat before or after the busiest lighting period and return to a viewpoint only if the crowds make it enjoyable.
Day 4 — Xijiang morning, depart from Kaili South. Revisit the lower lanes while shops are opening and day groups have not filled the bridges. A small cultural display or locally run craft session is a better use of an extra hour than racing to another panoramic deck. Allow the internal shuttle, scenic gate and 40 km road transfer before your train. A morning departure erases this village morning; book an afternoon or later train if it matters to you.
The three places serve different purposes: Zhaoxing for built Dong village life, Tang'an for the walking landscape above it, Xijiang for a larger Miao settlement and a managed evening panorama. A five-day route that adds Jiabang terraces and multiple remote villages is a private-driver trip requiring more road and lodging research, not a simple extension of this rail-led four-day plan.
At Zhaoxing, walk between the drum towers, bridges and residential lanes first. Take the Tang'an path only when shoes, weather and a return ride line up. Terraces are seasonal; a photo from planting or harvest season is not a promise of the same color on your date.
At Xijiang, see the stepped houses from the viewpoint, then descend into lanes away from the busiest photo deck. A night is worthwhile if you want the settlement after day groups leave, but room comfort and noise vary sharply. Restaurant menus and souvenir streets are more commercial than the panorama suggests.
Choose a hotel by its actual gate, shuttle stop, luggage stairs and vehicle access, not a generic “village center” label. Ask whether it can meet you at a stop after dark. Compare Guizhou hotels on Trip.com after deciding which village gets each night.
Rice dishes, sour soups and locally preserved ingredients are rewarding, but heat levels and ingredients vary; ask before ordering when you have allergies or a low spice tolerance. Request permission for portraits, dress respectfully in religious spaces and keep drones to places where local rules allow them. Check China trains for the station at each end of your route; “Qiandongnan” alone is not a station choice.

Two nights can pair Zhaoxing and Xijiang with one road transfer; three or four make room for Tang’an, while Zhenyuan deserves an additional stay.
