Beihai: choose the mainland coast or a volcanic-island escape
Beihai (北海, Běihǎi) works best as two distinct travel products. Stay on the mainland for arcade architecture, open coast and an easy seafood-led evening, or cross to Weizhou Island for volcanic cliffs, coastal light and a slower two-night journey. The city becomes much easier once you choose that branch before booking the hotel and ferry.

A complete mainland-and-island first route
The flagship treats Old City, Silver Beach and Qiaogang as one connected mainland product, then protects two island nights around the official ferry and Crocodile Mountain. Shengtang Church is a fully specified route-only branch: it keeps exact arrival, transport and its own photograph without creating a thin guide or View Details link.
Choose the trip before the base
| Trip shape | Best for | Strongest sequence |
|---|---|---|
| One mainland night | Architecture, beach time and an evening meal | Old Street → Silver Beach in suitable weather → Qiaogang |
| Two nights on Weizhou | The best-balanced island experience | Ferry buffer → Crocodile Mountain core → one sunrise, church or sunset branch |
| Mainland night + two island nights | A calmer first visit | Mainland orientation → protected ferry day → complete island product |
The mainland is not a substitute for the island, and the island is not a quick Beihai neighbourhood. If weather or sailing uncertainty matters, keep the mainland night before the crossing or after the return rather than connecting directly to a flight or long-distance train.
Build the mainland day from three different moods
Read the arcades on Old Street
Beihai Old Street (北海老街) is strongest as an architectural walk through arcades, balconies and a historic commercial grid. Start at the Old Street Visitor Centre on AMap, look above the storefronts, and use open side lanes to see how the street meets the older waterfront city. The retail mix can feel repetitive, so give the fabric and proportions more attention than souvenir collecting.
Give Silver Beach a real weather window
Silver Beach (银滩) is the mainland's open-coast product: broad sand, sea air and space after the tighter old-city streets. The wider resort covers several access points; for a clear road arrival, use the Shanghai Road visitor-distribution point on AMap. Check the official Silver Beach notices on the day. Swimming, sea activities and beach access depend on current weather, warnings and operator controls.
Finish with Qiaogang food
Qiaogang is the evening food layer, not another heritage sight. Use the Qiaogang food-street anchor on AMap, then choose by visible turnover, posted prices and the kind of meal you want. It can be busy and some menus repeat across stalls; a focused seafood meal, sugar-water dessert or local snack sequence is more rewarding than trying to sample everything.
AMap's road model checked on 21 August 2026 placed Old Street about 7.6 km / 29 minutes by car from Qiaogang. Qiaogang was about 1.2 km / 17 minutes on foot from the passenger port. These are useful planning snapshots, not traffic or operating promises.
Make Weizhou a separate overnight product
Weizhou Island earns two nights for most first visits. Its core is the volcanic coast around Crocodile Mountain; Wucai Beach at sunrise, Shengtang Church, South Bay food and a west-coast sunset are branches chosen around weather, light and the return sailing.
Book the crossing only through a current official channel. The official ferry platform covers the passenger sailing between Beihai International Passenger Port and Weizhou Xijiao Wharf. A ferry booking is not the island admission, and island admission does not include the outbound ferry, return ferry or island transfer unless checkout explicitly says so.
Carry the original passport used for the booking and protect time on both sides of the crossing. Current sailings can change or stop with sea conditions and typhoon controls; do not place a non-refundable flight or long-distance train immediately after the expected return.
Stay where the chosen product starts
For a mainland visit, a central or station-connected hotel makes Old Street and onward rail easier; a southern-coast base favors Silver Beach, Qiaogang and the passenger port. For an island visit, first confirm that the property is actually on Weizhou, then compare its transfer instructions with the sights you chose. A broad “Beihai” result can include both mainland and island inventory.
Compare Beihai and Weizhou stays on Trip.com after choosing the base. Verify the exact map pin, international-guest policy, cancellation terms and whether any pickup is genuinely included.
Arrive at the right transport node
Beihai Station, Beihai Fucheng Airport and the International Passenger Port are separate arrivals. AMap's dated road models placed the station about 6.2 km / 18 minutes by car from the port and the airport terminal about 27.3 km / 44 minutes away. Live traffic can change both.
If arriving by rail, compare trains on Trip.com and match the Chinese station name on the issued ticket. For Weizhou, navigate to the International Passenger Port on AMap, then follow the terminal instructions shown on the current ferry booking. A map route cannot prove a sailing, boarding window or included transfer.
Illustrated guide
The most reliable first plan is simple: use the mainland for architecture, sand and food; give the island two nights and a protected ferry buffer.
