Where to Stay in Xi'an
First-time visitors should usually stay inside or immediately beside the city wall. Bell Tower is the famous center, but North Street, Dachaishi or Yongningmen can give better interchange access, quieter rooms or easier vehicle pickup. Choose Qujiang / Giant Wild Goose Pagoda only when Tang-style night attractions and family space matter more than old-city convenience.
Quick decision
| Area | Best for | Main trade-off | Useful stations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bell Tower / North Street | first visit and citywide balance | busy, tourist pricing, noise | Bell Tower, North Street |
| Yongningmen / South Gate | nightlife, wall views, younger travelers | late noise and heavy traffic | Yongningmen |
| Dachaishi / eastern old city | value, food and station access | less iconic outside the door | Dachaishi |
| Qujiang / Giant Wild Goose Pagoda | families and Tang-night programs | farther from Muslim Quarter and rail hub | Dayanta, Datangfurongyuan |
Bell Tower and North Street: first-time balance
Bell Tower is a Line 2/6 interchange; North Street connects Lines 1 and 2. From either, the Muslim Quarter is roughly 10–25 minutes on foot, Yongningmen 10–20 minutes by metro, and Xi'an North Railway Station about 30–45 minutes on Line 2. North Street is usually calmer and can offer better value while remaining one stop from Bell Tower.
Choose Bell Tower for maximum walkability and North Street for interchange convenience. The main risks are traffic, street noise and hotel entrances hidden inside mixed-use towers. Muslim Quarter access is useful, but do not assume every meal should happen on its busiest tourist lane.

Yongningmen and South Gate: wall views and nightlife
Yongningmen station is on Line 2 beside the most ceremonial city-wall gate. Bell Tower is one metro stop away; the Beilin Museum and Shuyuanmen area are commonly 10–25 minutes on foot. Big Wild Goose Pagoda is roughly 25–40 minutes by metro, bus or car.
This is the best base for evening wall views, bars, malls and a younger city-break feel. Hotels facing the gate can be photogenic but noisy. Road crossings and underground passages matter when carrying luggage, so test the precise approach and do not pay for a “wall view” without checking recent guest photos.
Search Yongningmen hotels on Trip.com, filtering for quiet rooms if nightlife is not the priority.
Dachaishi and eastern old city: value and local food
Dachaishi is a Line 4/6 interchange. Line 4 runs directly toward Xi'an North Railway Station and south toward Dayanta; Line 6 reaches Bell Tower. Beilin, the city-wall east gates and local food streets are close enough to combine without crossing the city repeatedly.
Choose this area for value, transport and a less packaged old-city base. It lacks the instant postcard setting of Bell Tower, but often gives a better room for the price. Check whether the hotel is inside the wall or across a major road, because the pedestrian experience changes sharply.

Qujiang and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda: family evenings
Dayanta and Datangfurongyuan stations anchor the museum, pagoda, park and Tang-themed night zone. Shaanxi History Museum may be walkable from some hotels; Bell Tower generally takes 25–40 minutes, while Xi'an North Railway Station is around 40–60 minutes. The Terracotta Warriors still require a separate eastward journey from any city base.
Families gain larger modern hotels, parks and easy returns after the evening light programs. The trade-off is a longer journey to the city wall, Muslim Quarter and north station. Crowd controls around major evening programs can also change car access and walking routes.

Three rings around the Bell Tower
Someone who has lived beside the Bell Tower for years splits the area into three rings:
| Ring | Where | For | Against |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hotels on the Bell Tower roundabout | Step straight out to the Bell and Drum Towers | Noisy at night, highest prices, many older buildings |
| 2 | About 10 minutes' walk out, along East Street or South Street | Calmer and noticeably cheaper, still walkable to the Muslim Quarter and East Street | None worth noting; this is the best value for most visitors |
| 3 | One or two metro stops out | Lowest prices | Daily commuting time |
Dachaishi (大差市), Line 4/6.
- Lines: Line 4 runs to Xi'an Railway Station, the Daming Palace, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Great Tang All-Day Mall. Line 6 runs to the Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter.
- Xi'an Railway Station: two stops away, about 7 minutes.
- Terracotta Warriors: from the station, take a C-train to Lintong (about 19 minutes from ¥10), then bus 613 to the museum (5 stops, ¥5).
Guangji Street, Line 6. It is a step behind Dachaishi for connections, but it sits beside Zhubashi (竹笆市), a lively, less touristy food street. Hotels set back in the lanes there are quiet at night.
A summer warning. In July and August many visitors sightsee mainly in the evening. Taxis leaving the Great Tang All-Day Mall after 21:00 are scarce and the roads jam. One traveler staying at Yongningmen spent 40–50 minutes in traffic each night. If your evenings are mostly in Qujiang, stay in Qujiang or near a Line 4 station so you can ride the metro home before it closes.
Do not move hotels for one attraction
- Terracotta Warriors: visit as a day trip; stay in Lintong only for a deliberate hot-spring or multi-site extension.
- Xi'an North: use a station hotel only for a very late arrival or early departure.
- Muslim Quarter: stay nearby if late food is central, but North Street or Guangji Street can be quieter than the main lanes.
- Airport: the airport metro makes a central stay practical for normal flight times.
Booking checks for foreign visitors
Confirm that the property accepts your passport and nationality and completes temporary accommodation registration. Apartments inside residential compounds may not provide the same reception or registration support as a hotel. Verify lift access, heating/air-conditioning, window type, smoke policy and late-arrival procedure.
Save the Chinese address, tower name and entrance pin. Xi'an's wall and major roads can make a short straight-line distance a longer pedestrian route. Commute ranges above are estimates; check the live map and current station exits.
The practical rule
Choose a two-line station inside the wall unless one outer-city cluster dominates the trip. A quieter block near North Street or Dachaishi can be more useful than paying to hear Bell Tower traffic all night.
