Imperial rooflines in central Beijing

Where to Stay in Beijing

Beijing's headline sights are too dispersed for one hotel to be “next to everything.” First-time visitors should choose a central interchange with a short station walk, then accept that 30–50 minutes on the metro is normal for some days. Wangfujing/Dongdan is easiest for a classic first trip; Qianmen/Zhushikou is atmospheric; Xidan is balanced and practical; Sanlitun/Guomao suits nightlife and modern Beijing.

Wangfujing and Dongdan: easiest first visit

This is the simplest base for early central-axis days. Wangfujing, Jinyu Hutong and Dongdan provide access to Lines 1, 5 and 8 across the area. The Forbidden City approaches are roughly 15–35 minutes by walking and metro, depending on the reserved entrance and security routing. Temple of Heaven is commonly 25–40 minutes; Summer Palace and the Great Wall departure points are much farther.

Choose it for a short visit, older family members who need predictable hotel services, or a trip with several early palace and museum bookings. Expect higher rates, shopping-street crowds and a commercial atmosphere. Security controls can alter the final walking route, so do not rely on straight-line distance to Tiananmen.

Qianmen and Zhushikou: heritage evenings

Qianmen gives Line 2 access and central-axis atmosphere; Zhushikou connects Lines 7 and 8 and can be a more balanced transport choice. Temple of Heaven is roughly 15–30 minutes, Tiananmen approaches 15–30 minutes, and the Lama Temple area about 30–45 minutes. South Railway Station is also relatively convenient.

This area works for families and travelers who value pedestrian evenings more than nightlife. Courtyard hotels can be memorable, but an alley address may mean stairs, no lift, limited vehicle access or a long luggage walk. Qianmen's pedestrian zone can also be noisy and crowded. Verify the door-to-station route rather than trusting a “Qianmen” label.

Search Qianmen and Zhushikou hotels on Trip.com, filtering recent reviews for lift, heating, soundproofing and taxi access.

Xidan and Caishikou: central balance and value

Xidan is a Line 1/4 interchange with malls and citywide connections. Caishikou serves Lines 4 and 7 and often offers better-value rooms south-west of the palace core. From Xidan, Tiananmen is around 10–25 minutes and the Summer Palace 35–55 minutes. Caishikou is useful for Beijing South and Daxing Airport connections, while still remaining within about 25–40 minutes of many central sights.

Choose this zone when arrival hub, room quality and interchange convenience matter more than a postcard street outside. It is especially useful for travelers splitting time between the old city and western sights. The trade-off is less immediate atmosphere; the reward is fewer forced cross-city transfers.

Compare Xidan and Caishikou hotels on Trip.com, keeping the actual walk to the platform short.

Sanlitun and Guomao: nightlife and modern Beijing

Sanlitun is served by Tuanjiehu and Workers' Stadium; Guomao is a Line 1/10 interchange. These areas suit business travelers, upscale dining and late evenings. The Forbidden City or Qianmen commonly takes 35–55 minutes including the final walk. Capital Airport access can be easier than from the far west, but Daxing Airport is less convenient.

Hotels are generally modern and vehicle access is easier, yet nightlife noise varies block by block. This is a poor choice if every morning begins with central heritage. It is a strong choice if half the trip is business, dining or contemporary art in eastern Beijing.

Check Sanlitun and Guomao hotels on Trip.com, then test the morning heritage commute before booking.

Budget, windows and lifts

What a night costs. During Golden Week 2026, a traveler kept five well-located nights inside the Third Ring Road under ¥400 each by booking near Line 4 stations (Xisi, Lingjing Hutong, Renmin University). That included some four-star rooms. Typical ranges outside peak holidays:

AreaMid-range roomsNotes
Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai and Qianmen¥400–1,500Chain hotels are the safer bet among the many small courtyard properties.
Xidan¥300–1,000Strong choice of economy and upper-mid chains.
WangfujingHigherMost international five-star hotels are here; easiest if budget is not the limit.

Window types. Central Beijing rooms are small, and the listing often specifies the window:

ListingMeaning
外窗Outward-facing window
内窗Window onto a corridor or light well
无窗No window

Windowless rooms save money but are hard to sleep in for several nights. Book windowed rooms early with free cancellation, and read the lowest reviews first for noise, hot water and lift problems.

Lifts and luggage.

  • Older properties next to Line 2 can lack a direct lift.
  • Some older Line 1 and Line 2 stations still have awkward lift access. The Jianguomen transfer is one example.
  • Prefer a hotel on a newer line (4, 6, 7, 8 or 10) or check the station's lift exit before booking.

This matters with luggage, strollers or older relatives.

Taxis near Tiananmen. Taxis and ride-hailing can only stop at set points around Tiananmen. A hotel right beside the square is not necessarily easier by car.

A value base: Jiaomenxi

Jiaomenxi (角门西) is a residential Line 4/10 interchange in the south. Rooms cost roughly half the price of comparable hotels inside the Second Ring Road, and the streets are full of everyday restaurants.

It suits a budget-conscious, metro-first trip, especially if you arrive at Beijing South or Daxing Airport.

Arrival-hub shortcuts

Arriving atShortcut
Daxing AirportTake the Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao (about 25 minutes), then change to Line 10 or 19. A taxi into the center takes about an hour and costs roughly ¥150.
Capital AirportThe Capital Airport Express connects to Lines 10 and 2. Huixinxijie Nankou on Line 5/10 is a practical mid-price base on the north side.
Universal BeijingA few hotels near Liyuan and Huaxiang on Line 1/Batong Line run evening shuttles from the resort. They are worth it if you plan to stay until park closing.

When another base is better

  • Haidian / Xiyuan: choose it for the Summer Palace, universities or a longer west-Beijing stay—not for a two-night classic visit.
  • Lama Temple / northern Dongcheng: excellent for hutong atmosphere and food, with longer rides to the far south and Daxing Airport.
  • South Railway Station area: use for a late arrival or early departure, not simply because one train uses the terminal.
  • Airport hotels: solve one flight connection; they do not solve the sightseeing week.

Booking checks for foreign visitors

Mainland hotels register foreign guests. Confirm before payment that the property accepts your passport and nationality and can complete temporary accommodation registration. Boutique courtyards and apartments deserve extra scrutiny: confirm 24-hour reception, legal guest registration, heating or air-conditioning, lift access and whether a car can reach the door.

Save the hotel name, Chinese address and map pin. Check that the route is not between two stations or across a difficult overpass. Commute ranges here are planning estimates; ticket controls, central security zones and rush hour can change the live trip.

The practical rule

Pick a hotel within a short walk of the line pair that serves your fixed bookings and arrival hub. Being beside one attraction is less useful than having a reliable interchange for five different days.
