Late spring and summer bring grass and flowers but also peak traffic; autumn shortens daylight and winter changes road products. Mountain passes can close in any shoulder season.
Where to go next
Continue west to Sayram and Khorgos or southeast to one chosen grassland base. Urumqi and Altay are separate journeys with major transfer time.
