Drepung Monastery: choose the climb for the scale
Drepung is the larger, quieter and more physically demanding choice in the recurring Sera-versus-Drepung decision. Its hillside arrangement is either the reason to go or the clearest reason to skip it.
Recent visitors disagree strongly about value. Some preferred Sera's easier grounds; others valued Drepung's scale, worship activity, architecture and views. The correct verdict depends on whether the climb contributes to your visit or consumes it.
Who should choose Drepung
Choose Drepung when you want an unhurried half-day, can handle sustained uphill movement and have interpretation for a large active institution. Choose Sera when a shorter, generally flatter visit is the priority.
Do not put Drepung on arrival day or use a fixed step count from social media. Paving, open halls, the public route and your group's pace control the actual effort.

Build the return before entering
Visible visitor discussion flagged uncertainty about return transport. A drop-off is not a return plan. Your authorized organizer should write down the exact entrance, pickup point, waiting terms and fallback if the visit ends early or a road control changes.
Do not rely on an informal local ride or a generic map pin. Use the verified lower ticket-office anchor, about 8 km by AMap road from Jokhang, while remembering that the monastery complex continues uphill. Your organizer still controls the legal vehicle route and pickup.
Religious practice before the itinerary
Debate may occur, but no current primary schedule was established in this pass. Do not build the value of Drepung around seeing it. Visit only open areas, move with staff directions, give worshippers priority and never photograph restricted interiors or people without permission.
One same-day visitor saw debate at both Drepung and Sera; that proves a particular day, not a dependable program. Religious observance may change access without matching a tourist calendar.
Live ticket boundary
The July 2026 official city guide said onsite ticket purchase was used at that time. It did not settle current hours, halls, passport processing or worship-day closures. Verify all four with the organizer before departure.
Final verdict
Choose Drepung when a large hillside monastery is worth a slower climb and you have a verified return vehicle. Skip it without regret when physical margin is low; Sera solves a different, more compact visitor job.
Do not interpret a vehicle reaching the lower ticket office as accessible access to the monastery above. Before committing, ask the authorized organizer which halls are open, how much vertical gain and stair work remain, whether any internal transport is operating, and where a traveler can wait safely if the group separates. Pair the visit with recovery time, not a second fixed climb.
